Intimacy coordinators are professionals brought onto film sets to ensure s scenes are filmed safely and with respect for everyone involved. They work with actors to establish comfortable boundaries, plan the physical movements in these scenes, and make sure the whole process feels safe and comfortable. As Florence Pugh explained, their purpose isn’t to make things more difficult, but to create a clear and secure environment for storytelling.
She explained that the intention wasn’t to interfere, create confusion, or add unnecessary complications or awkwardness. She added that her experiences with these situations have been both positive and negative.
Florence Pugh shared that her experiences with on-set coordinators have been mixed. While some have been great, others have created uncomfortable and awkward environments. She described one instance where a coordinator was unhelpful and seemed more interested in being involved for the sake of it than actually assisting the production. She believes the role of the on-set coordinator is still evolving and figuring out best practices.
Florence Pugh shared that collaborating with experienced intimacy coordinators has deepened her understanding of storytelling within sex scenes. She explained that these coordinators help explore the narrative aspects, such as the context of the scene, the characters’ relationship, and the physical details, like how and for how long intimacy unfolds.
It often feels like everyone’s just trying to get through intimate scenes. But working with a great intimacy coordinator really opened my eyes. I realized it’s about understanding the emotional connection and choreography, not just filming a sexual scene. Some coordinators are better than others, and I’ve learned from the good ones just how powerful and effective a well-handled intimate scene can be.
Her remarks show that intimacy coordinators are still relatively new to the film industry. When they work effectively, they help actors perform sensitive scenes safely and realistically, which can enhance the storytelling and ensure a secure environment for the entire cast and crew.
