‘Christy’ Starring Sydney Sweeney Suffers One of Worst Wide Releases Ever

“Christy,” the 2025 sports drama starring Sydney Sweeney, had a rough start at the box office.

I just saw a really compelling film directed by David Michôd, who also co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes. It’s based on the incredible true story of Christy Martin, a former pro boxer, and it really pulls you in.

The film chronicles the incredible journey of a female boxing star, from her 1990s breakthrough to the shocking 2010 attempt on her life by her husband and former coach. The cast also includes Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, and Chad L. Coleman.

The movie first showed at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5th as part of the Special Presentations lineup. It then opened in movie theaters across the country on November 7th, distributed by Black Bear Pictures.

The movie “Christy” debuted in over 2,000 North American theaters, but it didn’t attract many viewers. Box Office Mojo reports the film made just $600,000 on its first Friday, playing in 2,184 theaters. This placed it tenth at the box office and suggested the film would only earn around $3 million for the entire weekend.

Sydney Sweeney recently shared how she got ready for her role in the movie. She explained that she spent about three and a half months training. While people have complimented her physical transformation for the part, the movie didn’t draw in many viewers.

The first trailer is out for ‘CHRISTY’, a new movie starring Sydney Sweeney as boxer Christy Martin. It hits theaters November 7th.
