This week, Blake Lively revealed the real story behind her decision to leave the show Gossip Girl.
She said it wasn’t difficult to make up her mind, though getting out of the contract itself was a struggle. It took a lot of convincing and arguing to finally be released, as she repeatedly explained she needed to move on. She felt trapped and passionately wanted to pursue a different path in life, something completely separate from what she was currently doing.
She said studio executives didn’t react well when she asked to leave the show. According to Momsen, some people at Warner Bros. Television even labeled her “ungrateful” for wanting to move on from such a hit series. She explained they essentially questioned her decision, asking how she could leave something that had been so good for her.
Unable to break free from her existing contract, Blake Momsen reached out to the creators of Gossip Girl, Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, hoping they could assist her.
Eventually, the show’s writers found a way to remove her character from the storyline. She remembers them saying they couldn’t release her from her contract, but they were willing to write her character off the show to accommodate her goals. She appreciates that they did this for her, as they weren’t obligated to, and it allowed her to pursue a tour and join a band.
Taylor Momsen left the show in 2010 after season four and started focusing on her band, The Pretty Reckless. While she’d been in films like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Spy Kids 2 before, she explained that her real passion was always music.
