The initial trailer for the upcoming Michael Jackson movie, Michael, is proving incredibly popular online. It reached over 30 million views in just six hours – about 50% more than the first trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 earned in the same amount of time.

Lionsgate‘s Adam Fogelson announced the news during a recent earnings call. He highlighted the positive initial reaction to the film and provided updates on its development, hinting at potential sequels.

Antoine Fuqua directs Michael, a highly anticipated new film produced by Graham King, who also produced Bohemian Rhapsody.

The movie will be released in theaters on April 24, 2026. Producer Fogelson explained that Lionsgate initially intended to release Michael as one film, but it was split into two parts. This decision was made because the first version was over three and a half hours long, and also because of legal issues concerning a scene involving one of Jackson’s accusers. An agreement between the accuser and Jackson’s estate prohibited showing their story in the film.

Fogelson addressed questions about future plans for the project, stating the creative team is still dedicated to developing the story, but didn’t officially announce a sequel. He added, “We recently saw the director’s cut of the first film, and it’s fantastic.”

We haven’t officially announced a second movie yet, but our team is already developing ideas so we can start working on it shortly after the first one comes out.

Fogelson also commended Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew and the actor portraying him in the upcoming film. He noted that audiences have eagerly anticipated this project, and believes Jaafar’s performance is truly impressive.

There’s a lot of excitement building for the movie Michael before it even comes out. The teaser trailer broke records, and people are really interested in seeing Jaafar Jackson play Michael Jackson, making it one of the most anticipated music biopics in a long time.
