Blake Lively states she has suffered significant financial losses due to what she describes as a damaging smear campaign surrounding the release of her film, It Ends With Us. Legal documents filed by her team indicate these damages total approximately $161 million.
The campaign reportedly damaged her career, standing, and companies. Her lawyers calculate she lost around $56 million due to canceled acting roles, production work, and other opportunities.
In addition to the legal claims, it’s reported that Blake Lively’s beauty company, Blake Brown, experienced losses of around $49 million, while her beverage lines, Betty Buzz and Betty Booze, lost approximately $22 million. Her legal team also argues she’s faced $34 million in damage to her reputation due to negative online commentary, estimating around 65 million negative mentions on social media.
Colleen Hoover, known as Lively, filed a lawsuit on December 31, 2024, against Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the director of It Ends With Us, as well as producer Jamey Heath, studio head Steve Sarowitz, and their public relations teams. She alleges they harassed her online after she spoke up about concerns regarding sexual harassment that occurred during filming. The court case is scheduled to start in March of next year.
I was surprised to see the details of the damages released yesterday. Previously, her legal team just stated the damages exceeded $75,000, but now they’re saying the actual total is much greater. What’s even more interesting is that they intend to request up to three times the amount of the actual damages as punitive damages, which could significantly increase the final figure.
Attorneys for Lively stated that the $161 million amount is just an initial assessment and is subject to change after evidence is presented in court.
According to Gregory Doll, an attorney at Doll Amir Eley in Los Angeles, initial demands in a negotiation are often intentionally high. He explained that the goal is to propose a number large enough to make the opposing side take the matter seriously and be motivated to reach a settlement.
Baldoni also sued, alleging Lively’s accusations cost him $400 million. However, the lawsuit was dismissed in June when a judge determined he couldn’t claim defamation based on statements made within a legal filing.
Records filed in court reveal that several well-known figures in Hollywood were identified as potential sources of information for the case. Those listed include Taylor Swift, Emily Blunt, Scooter Braun, Hugh Jackman, Gigi Hadid, Ari Emanuel, and various high-ranking executives from Sony.
Taylor Swift’s name has been mentioned repeatedly in the legal dispute. While Baldoni’s legal team attempted to have her give testimony, the court decided against it.
Okay, so this whole situation is still a big deal, and it looks like it’s actually heading to court next year. I just read about it – the details started popping up in some official court papers that became public this week. It’s definitely one I’ll be keeping an eye on!
