Just before Guillermo del Toro’s new movie, Frankenstein, arrives on Netflix, his first Oscar winner, Pan’s Labyrinth, is returning to cinemas. The critically acclaimed film, a dark fantasy set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, is approaching its 20th anniversary. Cineverse has acquired the rights to re-release Pan’s Labyrinth in theaters across North America, according to Deadline.
Cineverse has acquired all North American distribution rights for the film, covering home entertainment, video-on-demand, and streaming. They also plan to release it in high-quality, wide-screen formats and will include original content like podcasts. Guillermo del Toro is very pleased with Cineverse and their plans to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary.
We’re thrilled to be partnering with Cineverse to bring this film back to theaters and offer enhanced versions for home viewing. Cineverse is dedicated, ambitious, and excellent at reaching large audiences. Together, we aim to reconnect longtime fans and introduce the film to new generations, giving everyone the chance to experience it on the big screen again.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth was highly acclaimed, earning six Academy Award nominations and winning three: for Best Production Design, Best Makeup, and Best Cinematography (awarded to Guillermo Navarro). While Del Toro didn’t receive an Oscar for Pan’s Labyrinth, he later won Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of Water in 2018, and Best Animated Feature for Pinocchio in 2023.
Yolanda Macias, head of Cineverse’s film division, expressed her excitement about collaborating with Guillermo del Toro and his team on this incredible film. She said they’re eager to bring it back to cinemas for longtime fans, and also to share it with a new generation of viewers who will experience the story for the first time.
We expect this will eventually be available on physical discs, probably in 4K quality. That’s what many fans, including myself, are hoping for.
