Deleted ‘Scooby-Doo’ Scene Too Scary for Theaters, Left Test Audiences Shocked

The 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo movie updated the beloved cartoon, bringing its characters to life with a mix of comedy and thrilling mysteries.

The movie takes place at a spooky resort called Spooky Island, and follows Scooby and his friends as they investigate a series of strange happenings. Though critics weren’t overly impressed, the film did well in theaters and has gained a dedicated following over time.

Many viewers are unaware that the first draft of the story contained a scene deemed too strong for younger audiences.

James Gunn, now famous for his daring stories, wrote a scene set in a locker room that was ultimately removed from the movie shown in theaters.

The scene showed Velma, played by Linda Cardellini, and Daphne, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Daphne walked into the locker room and found Velma behaving oddly – she seemed drunk and uncomfortable, and was surprisingly wearing a bikini.

It quickly becomes apparent that Velma is under some kind of evil influence. She starts cracking her neck and lets out a terrifying scream before aggressively pursuing Daphne, seemingly intent on harming her.

A scene from the Scooby Doo movie was removed after test audiences found it too frightening. The scene showed Velma, seemingly possessed, chasing after Daphne’s soul, and viewers were disturbed by it.

The film initially aligned with James Gunn’s idea for a darker, more adult-oriented story. However, due to its intense and mature themes, the studio felt it wasn’t appropriate for younger audiences and ultimately cut it before release.

The deleted scene eventually surfaced on VHS and DVD, and quickly became popular for its bold and unconventional content. It revealed a grittier, more provocative side of the film than what made it into cinemas.
