The fallout around Ghost of Yōtei continues, this time on the sales front.
A recent sales report shared by former Blizzard developer Mark Kern on X (formerly Twitter) indicates that Sony’s Ghost of Yōtei hasn’t sold as well as the original Ghost of Tsushima, even with the game generating a lot of excitement and costing more.
Kern reported that Yōtei sold 650,000 fewer copies than Tsushima over a 30-day period—about 16% less. He also noted that initial sales excitement for Yōtei seems to have died down.
The game is making money and isn’t a flop, but it’s still a letdown considering how popular the original was. Usually, sequels perform better than the games they follow, not worse.
He also mentioned that Ghost of Tsushima gained popularity through positive recommendations from players, but he doesn’t expect Yōtei to experience the same kind of boost.

Higher Price, Lower Impact
Okay, so Ghost of Yōtei didn’t exactly fly off the shelves – sales were down. But get this, because they charged a bit more for it, it actually brought in a little more money overall. Still, nobody’s getting their hopes up about it being a blockbuster or anything.
Based on leaked information, Sony and Sucker Punch aren’t happy with the recent performance, and a third game in the series might be put on hold.
“This is probably why Sucker Punch has publicly said they may skip doing a 3rd game for now.”

“SmashJT Was Right”
Kern acknowledged gaming YouTuber SmashJT, who was among the first to suggest the game’s sales would suffer because of negative reactions to the developer’s online conduct, stating that the sales figures confirmed SmashJT’s initial assessment.
While Kern refused to identify the source of the sales leak, he stated confidence in its accuracy:
This information is confidential, but I have access to some strong data. I’m confident these figures will be made public and verified in the future.
The sales numbers are in, and SmashJT was correct: Ghost of Yotei hasn’t sold as well as Ghost of Tsushima. After 30 days, Yotei has sold 650,000 fewer copies than Tsushima, which is 16% less than the original game. Looking at revenue…

Fan Backlash Continues
This sales issue follows weeks of criticism aimed at the studio. It began when developers publicly responded to a fictional assassination of Charlie Kirk, leading to calls for boycotts within the gaming community.
Viewers are still criticizing the studio on platforms like X, Reddit, and YouTube, claiming that negative feedback from players contributed to the disappointing results of Yōtei.

What This Means Going Forward
Ghost of Tsushima was a huge success for PlayStation, receiving excellent reviews, maintaining strong sales over time, and building a dedicated community of players.
Despite having impressive visuals and a strong marketing campaign, Yōtei hasn’t become a lasting cultural phenomenon. It’s uncertain if the series can regain popularity or change direction, particularly since plans for a third installment are currently stalled.
