In a new interview with Esquire Spain, the “Stranger Things” actor discussed both his personal experiences and professional journey, including his divorce from Lily Allen and speculation about his relationship with co-star Millie Bobby Brown.
You know, someone asked me if I’d change anything about how my life has gone, and it’s a really tough question. I actually think I’d either want to change absolutely everything, or nothing at all. It’s kind of an all-or-nothing thing for me, honestly.
He explained that true acceptance means embracing your entire life journey – the good and the bad. Even the painful parts, mistakes, and setbacks are valuable for growth, wisdom, and building deeper connections with others. He compared it to a house of cards: if you try to fix just one thing, the whole structure can fall apart, suggesting that changing one aspect of your life often requires a broader shift.
Harbour talked about how his life experiences influence his acting. He believes that personal struggles are essential to bringing authenticity to his work, stating, “If you’ve never been through anything, what do you really have to offer?” He explained that while he might wish for an easier life, he wouldn’t trade his experiences because they fuel his creativity. He doesn’t want to lose the depth that comes from hardship, saying, “If I were to change anything, I’d change everything…and then I wouldn’t be an artist anymore.” Ultimately, Harbour wants to continue making meaningful and emotionally resonant stories.
These comments follow Allen’s recent public statements about her marriage, where she mentioned Harbour violated boundaries they had set. Her new album, “West End Girl,” is believed to be about the breakup of their four-year marriage.
In a recent interview with The Times, Allen discussed how relationship boundaries are becoming blurred. He believes dating apps contribute to this by making people feel easily replaceable, leading to the idea that there’s always someone else available if you’re not satisfied.
Beyond his divorce, David Harbour is also dealing with reports of a complaint made by his “Stranger Things” co-star, Millie Bobby Brown, during filming. The Daily Mail claims Brown reportedly filed a detailed complaint, consisting of multiple pages, though the issues raised were not of a sexual nature. It’s currently unclear if any investigation took place or what the result might have been.
Harbour believes that all of life’s experiences, even the challenging ones, help us grow as people and influence our creative work. He explained, “I want to focus on my personal life, the people I care about, and building meaningful relationships.”
