Lynda Carter Approves of Sabrina Carpenter’s Wonder Woman

Many celebrities celebrated Halloween by dressing up as their favorite DC Comics characters. Paris Hilton channeled Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman from Batman Returns, but Sabrina Carpenter generated the most buzz. She performed while wearing a dazzling Wonder Woman costume inspired by the classic look Lynda Carter wore in the 1970s TV show. While some online fans criticized Carpenter for portraying a Wonder Woman with blonde hair (not traditionally seen in the comics), Lynda Carter herself quickly came to the singer’s defense, posting a message on X.

Lynda Carter addressed the debate about Wonder Woman’s hair color, pointing out that Wonder Woman represents strength within everyone, and can appear in different forms – sometimes even with blonde hair, like Sabrina Carpenter. While the most well-known version, inspired by Princess Diana, has always been dark-haired, mirroring her mother Queen Hippolyta, there have been other official versions with blonde hair. Carter specifically mentioned the ‘Super Friends’ cartoon from the 1970s, where the villain Cheetah temporarily became Wonder Woman.

Wonder Girl, Cassie Sandsmark, was once depicted as a blonde version of Wonder Woman in a possible future. More notably, in the 1990s, the character Artemis, known for her ponytail, actually became Wonder Woman for nearly a year. While her hair color is more of a reddish-blonde, similar to Sabrina Carpenter, it still represents a lighter-haired take on the iconic hero.

When a performer displayed Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume, it got a lot of press, but Variety accidentally referred to her as “Superwoman.” James Gunn of DC Studios responded with a confused “Superwoman??” on Threads, pointing out that Wonder Woman is a well-known character. Perhaps the mistake stemmed from Carter’s blonde hair and a mix-up with Supergirl. It would be fun to see the performer dress as Supergirl next Halloween, complete with a brunette wig, just to playfully confuse everyone – we’d definitely enjoy that!
