It’s a fantastic day for LGBTQ+ fans of One Piece! Netflix’s live-action adaptation just cast Cole Escola – a Tony Award-winning, openly non-binary performer – as the important character Bon Clay. Bon Clay will also be portrayed as non-binary in the show. One Piece has always been a diverse series, and having an openly queer actor play an openly queer character is incredibly exciting. (We also want to acknowledge Morgan Davies, a queer trans actor who plays Koby – we’re hoping the show establishes Koby as queer too!) Many fans already feel One Piece embodies queer themes, and it’s great to see Netflix backing that up with their casting choices. Here’s what we know so far.
Non-Binary Actor Cole Escola Will Play Bon Clay in One Piece Season 3
The second season of One Piece will premiere in March. Excitingly, casting for the third season is already underway! Netflix quickly renewed the live-action One Piece after its initial success, which thrilled fans. The newest addition to the crew will be Bon Clay, played by Cole Escola, known for their work in Oh Mary! This Broadway show, a unique drag queen take on the life of Mary Todd Lincoln, was a hit this year. Cole Escola not only starred in Oh Mary! but also wrote and created it, and they recently won Best Leading Actor in a Play – a first for an openly non-binary performer.
Now, Escola will play Bon Clay in One Piece season three. And yeah, this is a GREAT casting.
Who Is Bon Clay in One Piece?
Bon Clay from One Piece is a fascinating character – a truly unique assassin who blends performance art with deadly skill. They’re known for their extravagant, swan-like style and love of ballet fashion, and honestly, they embrace their inner diva! Their vibe is a captivating mix of graceful ballerina and dangerous killer, and fans adore them. Without giving away any plot details, even though Bon Clay starts out as a villain, it’s hard to believe someone so amazing could truly be bad. What’s most important to know about Bon Clay is that they value friendship above all else.
Bon Clay, a character in the anime and manga One Piece, identifies as both male and female. The show’s third season portrays this as non-binary in a way that many fans appreciate. Hopefully, the series will consistently use they/them pronouns for Bon Clay, as they deserve. Netflix describes Bon Clay as a skilled performer and a deadly, artistic assassin.
Bon Clay is a member of the villainous Baroque Works organization and plays a key role in the Alabasta storyline, which will be featured in the third season of One Piece. This arc follows the Straw Hat pirates as they journey to the desert kingdom of Alabasta and try to prevent a conflict between rebels and the royal army. With this casting news, fans can expect a fantastic adaptation of this popular story.
