While there have been many Godzilla films, I think 2023’s Godzilla Minus One is the best since the original 1954 movie. It’s a powerful film set in postwar Japan, dealing with themes of national shame, and it rightfully won an Oscar for its visual effects. It was also a surprisingly big hit internationally, which is unusual for a Japanese-made Godzilla film. So, it’s no surprise that Toho Studios is making a sequel. Takashi Yamazaki is returning as the writer, director, and VFX supervisor, and they’ve announced the title: Godzilla -0.0, also known as Godzilla Minus Zero. It’s a fitting title, though a little strange.

As a huge Godzilla fan, I was really excited to see Toho announce the next film with a quick video on Twitter for Godzilla Day 2025! The new logo is almost identical to Minus One – just with a ‘Zero’ instead of a ‘One’. It’s got me thinking, though. What does that even mean? Director Yamazaki explained that Minus One wasn’t just set before the original film, but that Godzilla pushed Japan from a ‘post-war zero’ to a ‘minus’. But honestly, if you think about it, subtracting zero doesn’t change anything – Godzilla Minus Zero would essentially just be Godzilla! It’s a bit like saying ‘the day after yesterday’ – it doesn’t really make sense, does it?
We’re really excited that Yamazaki will continue the story started in Minus One. Its themes are incredibly powerful and moving, especially considering the unique situation of post-WWII Japan, where citizens had to defend themselves against Godzilla because the military couldn’t get involved. We have full confidence this team will deliver another thrilling and impactful film.
No release date or official plot yet, but we’ll for sure keep you posted on the stomping to come.
