A new generation is breathing life into the world of Harry Potter! Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton – three talented young British actors – are voicing Harry, Ron, and Hermione in a brand-new full-cast audiobook series from Audible, starting with the first three books.
Starting November 4th, Audible is releasing a new recording of the popular series, with a new book available each month. The recordings boast a star-studded cast of over 200 actors, including Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore and Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort.
Getting the parts was a dream for the young actors. Treadaway, who voices Harry, said he’ll never forget when he found out he got the role.
The actors expressed overwhelming excitement and disbelief upon learning they’d been cast. Hermione’s voice actor, Stanton, called it a dream come true, questioning if it was actually happening. Ron’s new voice actor, Lester, felt similarly stunned, saying he still couldn’t quite believe he was part of such an incredible project with such a talented cast. Both described the experience as truly amazing and surreal.
Even though they usually recorded their parts individually, the three musicians quickly became good friends. As Treadaway explained, “Absolutely, we are! I think working on this project has brought us close together over time.”
The actors spent roughly a week recording their lines for the first three books in the series. Before they began, they re-watched the original Warner Bros. films and reread the books to get a better feel for their characters. Emma Watson explained that revisiting the books helped her understand Hermione’s personality more deeply, noting that “Hermione is a character who can be interpreted in many ways. She comes from a privileged background, and she’s incredibly intelligent and eager to learn.”
Lester found it tricky to perfect Ron’s country accent. He explained that it involved stretching out vowel sounds and making the ‘L’ and ‘R’ sounds more pronounced. He’s even started using the accent naturally in conversations sometimes, because it feels correct.
To help the actors feel more involved in their roles, the producers provided props like wands and Hogwarts robes during recording. According to actress Emma Stanton, these details were particularly helpful for her. She explained, “Practicing the wand movements while performing spells really helped me get into character, and I think all those small touches were key to bringing Hermione to life.”
Lester especially enjoyed a part of the job that reminded him of Ron—getting to eat during recording sessions. He fondly remembered those moments, saying, “It felt so authentic! The more takes, the better!”
Treadaway acknowledged he was influenced by Daniel Radcliffe’s performance as Harry Potter, but he also brought his own unique interpretation to the role. He explained, “I kept in mind previous versions of Harry Potter to maintain a sense of familiarity for the audience, but I also wanted to make the character my own.”
Voice acting was a first for all three actors involved. Patrick Stanton explained that it demanded intense concentration. He noted that portraying a character solely through voice requires conveying emotion and maintaining clear, precise speech – a delicate balance between natural delivery and ensuring the microphone captures every nuance.
The young actors had to keep their involvement a secret for months, until Audible officially announced the project in August. Lester admitted that keeping quiet was challenging. He explained, “When I finally told my friends, they were really impressed! But it was tough not being able to share what I was working on.”
All three performers have extensive experience in both theater and film. Treadaway is known for roles in popular West End shows like Mary Poppins, Matilda the Musical, and Mrs. Doubtfire. Lester has appeared in productions such as Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Les Misérables, and even a Marvel project, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Stanton began her stage career early, starring as Matilda at age nine, and later performed in Starlight Express in London.
The group hasn’t had the chance to meet J.K. Rowling, but they’re all hoping to someday. “I’m a huge fan of her writing and the books,” said Stanton. “We’re really hoping we’ll get to meet her eventually.”
