Jennifer Lawrence is a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, telling The New York Times it’s “the most incredible movie I’ve ever seen.” She watched it in 70mm IMAX and said the format was how the film was meant to be seen.
It’s funny, because this is such a different response than she had to Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread a few years ago. I remember she was on Marc Maron’s ‘WTF’ podcast back in 2018, and she admitted she just couldn’t get into it. She said she really tried – she made it about three minutes, which she emphasized – but ultimately couldn’t invest the time. She even apologized to anyone who loved it, which I thought was pretty honest!
Lawrence suggested her response was influenced by her recent breakup with Darren Aronofsky, whom she’d met on the set of the 2017 film mother!.
Scheduled for release in 2025, One Battle After Another is an action-packed thriller directed, written, and co-produced by Anderson. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, the film is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland. The story centers on a former revolutionary who is pulled back into a life of danger when a dishonest military officer begins pursuing him and his daughter.
Paul Thomas Anderson had long hoped to make a movie based on Vineland, and he wove personal experiences into the story. The film was shot in California using VistaVision, a format he hadn’t used for a main movie shoot since the 1960s. At a cost of $130 to $175 million, it’s Anderson’s most expensive project so far.

The film debuted in Los Angeles on September 8, 2025, and opened nationwide on September 26, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Reviewers particularly liked director Anderson’s work on the story and script, as well as the film’s visuals, pacing, soundtrack, and action. The cast also received high praise. To date, the movie has earned $191 million globally, making it Anderson’s most successful film to date.
Jennifer Lawrence will be working with Leonardo DiCaprio again in Martin Scorsese’s next movie, currently titled What Happens at Night. Filming is scheduled to start at the beginning of next year.
