18-Year-Old Mason Thames Smashes 30-Year-Old Jim Carrey Box Office Record

Mason Thames is quickly becoming a Hollywood success story. The 18-year-old actor recently reached three significant box office achievements over Halloween weekend, making this a record-breaking year for him.

Thames first became known for his work on the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, which was released on June 13th.

He continued his success with two more films released in October: Black Phone 2, the follow-up to the horror film based on Joe Hill’s story, and Regretting You, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel.

Even though domestic movie ticket sales were down last weekend – the slowest of the year – Thames films still achieved impressive results, according to Variety. Black Phone 2 is on track to earn $104 million worldwide, making it one of just six horror movies in 2025 to surpass $100 million. Additionally, Regretting You is forecast to reach $50 million globally, becoming the third romantic film this year to achieve that level of success.

Including the $636 million from How to Train Your Dragon, Thames’ movies have made a total of $790 million worldwide this year. This puts the actor’s total 2025 earnings over $775 million, exceeding the box office results of almost every film released this year except Jurassic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Ne Zha 2. Throughout his career, films starring Thames have earned $952.7 million, with 2025 contributing nearly 83% of that impressive sum.

This is an impressive feat because it surpasses a record previously set by Jim Carrey. Back in 1994, Carrey had three movies – Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber – all reach the top spot at the box office in the same year. At just 18 years old, Thames’ quick success now places him among a very select group of performers.
