Finding the right actors to portray real people is crucial for music biopics, and some recent performances – like Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, and Angela Bassett as Tina Turner – have been fantastic. Director Sam Mendes clearly understands this, as he’s being very careful with casting for his upcoming four-part film about the Beatles. We already know who will play John, Paul, George, and Ringo (Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan). Equally important are the women who played significant roles in their lives, and now we know who will portray them: Anna Sawai, Saoirse Ronan, Aimee Lou Wood, and Mia McKenna-Bruce.
Sony revealed the actresses who will play the wives of the Beatles just in time for Halloween. Emma McKenna-Bruce will portray Maureen Starkey, Lily Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Camila Sawai will be Yoko Ono, and Naomi Wood will take on the role of Pattie Boyd. Director Sam Mendes expressed his excitement about casting these four talented women to bring these fascinating and individual figures to life.
If you’re familiar with the Beatles, you’ll recognize these women played significant roles in their lives. Linda McCartney teamed up with Paul to form Wings after the Beatles split. George Harrison wrote some of his most famous songs, like “Something,” about Pattie Boyd, but they later divorced and she married Eric Clapton, who was inspired to write “Layla” for her. Maureen Starkey was a Beatles fan before marrying Ringo, and it’s her Paul thanks at the end of “Get Back.” And Yoko Ono has often been unfairly blamed for the Beatles’ breakup over the last 50 years.
The four actresses all have impressive credentials. Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for an Oscar four times and has won a Golden Globe. Anna Sawai received both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work on Shogun. Florence Wood has been nominated for an Emmy and won a BAFTA TV Award, while Gemma McKenna-Bruce is a BAFTA winner.
The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event will debut in April 2028.
