AMC’s expanding Anne Rice Immortal Universe continues with Talamasca: The Secret Order, which debuted on October 26th. This series blends espionage with the supernatural, featuring Elizabeth McGovern (known from Downton Abbey), Nicholas Denton, and William Fichtner as the enigmatic Jasper. The Talamasca aren’t new to this universe, though – they’ve previously appeared in Interview with the Vampire and played a significant role in Mayfair Witches. And their history runs deep within Anne Rice’s original novels. While Rice never dedicated a novel solely to the Talamasca, the books offer plenty of information about this intriguing organization. Let’s explore the Talamasca: its purpose, origins, and everything you need to know.
What Is the Talamasca, and What Is Its Purpose?
The Talamasca, a very old organization in Anne Rice’s stories, has a simple motto: “We watch. And we are always here.” For over a thousand years, they’ve secretly studied all things supernatural. Officially, their purpose is just to observe and understand these beings, not to interfere with the world or reveal their existence. But not all members of the Talamasca are focused on pure research, and sometimes, powerful supernatural creatures – like vampires – actually run parts of the organization.
The Talamasca in Anne Rice’s Books
The Talamasca, a mysterious group, first appeared in Anne Rice’s 1988 novel, The Queen of the Damned. Their name blends Latin words meaning “animal” and “mask,” hinting at the masks worn by ancient shamans. Rice described them as “psychic detectives,” and they were the only ones aware of the vampires’ existence, as revealed in her book Interview with the Vampire.
Notable Talamasca Characters From Anne Rice’s Novels
In Queen of the Damned, the Talamasca society brings a new member, Jesse Reeves, into their ranks. They send her to the old New Orleans home once shared by Lestat, Louis, and Claudia to confirm the truthfulness of Louis’s story. This book also features David Talbot, who leads the Talamasca and later becomes a close associate of Lestat.

Anne Rice’s 1990 novel, The Witching Hour, introduces Aaron Lightner, another member of the Talamasca who assists Rowan Mayfair in understanding her magical heritage. Later, in the fourth book of the Vampire Chronicles, The Tale of the Body Thief, we meet Raglan James, a former Talamasca agent with the ability to swap bodies. This character has now transitioned to television, appearing in Interview with the Vampire and with plans to be featured in The Talamasca series.
The Elders of the Talamasca
In many vampire and witch stories, a secret group called “the Elders” appears. They are the real leaders of the Talamasca organization, but most members don’t know they exist. The author, Anne Rice, intentionally kept their identities hidden for a long time. While they usually prefer to observe from a distance, they went to war with Lestat when he turned the witch Merrick Mayfair into a vampire. Later, they managed to reach a peaceful agreement.
Anne Rice’s Origin Story for the Talamasca
In her 2014 novel, Prince Lestat, Anne Rice finally revealed the origins of the oldest vampires, known as the Elders. The first Elder was Gremt Stryker Knollys, an ancient spirit who created a physical body for himself in 585 AD. He later encountered the spirit of Hesketh, a vampire who had been killed and also became a ghost. Along with Hesketh’s still-living companion, Teshkamen (who created the vampire Marius roughly 2,000 years ago), this group founded the Talamasca – an organization dedicated to understanding their own supernatural existence. The novels state the Talamasca was founded in 758 AD. By the 21st century, they had given control of the organization to humans.
The Talamasca in Interview with the Vampire and AMC’s Immortal Universe

As a huge fan of the Anne Rice universe, especially now with the AMC adaptations, I’ve become really fascinated by the Talamasca. They’re this incredibly old and powerful organization – seriously, they’ve been around since 752! – that operates mostly in secret, even though they have branches all over the world. Basically, they’re dedicated to monitoring anything supernatural happening, from vampires and witches – which we see a lot of in Interview with the Vampire and The Mayfair Witches – to ghosts, poltergeists, and anything else you can imagine. In the first season of Interview with the Vampire, we meet Raglan James (played by James Kirk) as one of their agents, interacting with Daniel Molloy. Then, in Mayfair Witches, Ciprien Grieve takes on that role – he’s a new take on the character Aaron Lightner from the books. It’s cool to see how they connect the different stories!
It’s currently unclear whether the backstory of the Talamasca in AMC’s Immortal Universe will match the one established in Anne Rice’s novels, but it would be really interesting if it did.
The Talamasca in Talmasca: The Secret Order

The world of Talamasca: The Secret Order isn’t a unified front. As shown in the series, different branches of the organization, each run by separate leaders, often clash and look down on each other. This internal conflict is why Helen, from the London Talamasca, enlists the help of a young psychic, Guy Anatole, to track down those who’ve gone off the rails. But will Helen and Guy be able to find them before the rogue agents find him? You’ll have to watch the entire season on AMC to find out!
