Fans of Jack Kirby are working to rename a block of Essex Street – the area where he grew up – to Jack Kirby Way. This section of the street is between Delancey and Rivington Streets. Interestingly, in the early Fantastic Four comics, Kirby named the neighborhood of Ben Grimm (The Thing) “Yancy Street,” which many believe was inspired by Delancey Street. Given that Kirby considered The Thing his most personal Marvel creation, it’s fitting to honor him in this location – there’s no better place in New York City to do so.
It really gets me that Jack Kirby passed away in ’94. Unlike Stan Lee, he didn’t get to see how massive his creations would become with these huge movie franchises. It’s a shame, especially since he and Marvel were actually at odds for years. He was constantly fighting for proper recognition and to get his original artwork back. Honestly, the least they could do now is name a street after him in New York City. I’m really hoping the city approves it – his grandkids deserve to see their grandfather honored in the city that fueled so much of his imagination.
