Colin Farrell Still Holding Out Hope for DCU War Movie Recently Put On Hold

Colin Farrell recently discussed the DC movie Sgt. Rock, which has been on hold for a while, and expressed optimism that it might still be made.

The project was envisioned as a World War II adventure featuring Sgt. Rock, an experienced soldier, and a member of the French Resistance. Their mission: to locate the Spear of Destiny before the Nazis. Producer Peter Safran of DC Studios has called it a realistic and intense war movie focused on bravery and struggle.

By late 2024, Justin Kuritzkes had completed the screenplay. Following their collaboration on the 2024 film Queer, director Luca Guadagnino and actor Daniel Craig were discussing the possibility of working together on this new project.

Originally, DC Studios was optimistic about the script for Sgt. Rock and planned for it to be Luca Guadagnino’s next project, before he started working on a new version of American Psycho. However, by early 2025, Craig had left the project, likely due to conflicts with his schedule and the negative reviews of Queer.

Colin Farrell began talks to star in the film that spring, but production was quickly halted because of problems finding suitable filming locations. Soon after, James Gunn, a co-head of DC Studios, confirmed the project wasn’t creatively prepared to continue, and director Luca Guadagnino also departed around that time.

During a conversation with Josh Horowitz, Colin Farrell mentioned a script he really loved and expressed curiosity about its current status, saying, “I wonder what’s happening with it.”

When someone suggested the project might lose its appeal without director Luca Guadagnino, Colin Farrell responded that he was completely in the dark about its current status. He explained he’d been planning to work on it with Guadagnino, and they’d had several positive conversations about it. While he didn’t know what was happening with the project now, he strongly believed it was a worthwhile story and deserved to be made, praising the quality of the material.

It seems DC Studios wasn’t happy with the direction the movie was taking. James Gunn has said the script went through many revisions, but it just wasn’t improving. He explained, “It wasn’t getting better, it was stuck.” Ultimately, they decided not to move forward with the film because the script wasn’t strong enough, even with a talented director and writer involved.

Gunn explained that continuing with the project would have been a bad decision, stating, “Ultimately, everyone involved – the director, the writer, and us – would have ended up looking foolish. That’s why we decided to stop it.”

Currently, DC has no plans to move forward with Sgt. Rock. While writer/producer Brian Michael Bendis still thinks it’s a good idea, the project is on hold along with other DC films that haven’t started production.
