Losing your gear and character is a key part of the extraction shooter genre, and Arc Raiders follows suit. If you’re defeated and your team can’t revive you before you bleed out, you’ll lose all the items you were carrying – anything not safely stored in your limited inventory slots.
As a huge fan, I’m really excited to hear that the Arc Raiders team is thinking about ways to keep things fresh! They’ve actually been testing out a ‘second life‘ system – basically a way to get back into the action even after you’ve been taken down – and they haven’t said no to adding it to the game. It could become a core part of how the game works, or they might use it for special, limited-time events like the night raids and storms we already love. Either way, it sounds awesome!
We’ve been trying out different things,” explains executive producer Aleksander Grøndal. “We’d love to bring the full team back, but the matches are quite quick, and we haven’t quite figured out how to make that work yet. That said, it’s still a possibility for the future. One of the good things about the game is that you can enjoy a match without needing to set aside a whole hour.
Grøndal explains the team struggled to balance quick rounds with a way to bring players back into the game. They decided it’s currently better for players to simply leave the area and prepare for the next round with their teammates after someone is defeated.
Grøndal explained that this is likely something we’ll continue to discuss. While they aren’t making any commitments, it’s definitely something they’re thinking about.
Typical matches start at 30 minutes long, but players have a 10-minute grace period to join, leaving them with 20 minutes to survive before the map is destroyed by a nuclear blast. However, special in-game events can change this. For example, the ‘Locked Bunker’ event on Spaceport features a heavily-stocked area to raid and extends the match time to 40 minutes. Other events could similarly adjust how long players have to play.
Grøndal explains that match length can vary depending on the circumstances, especially when there are many objectives to finish. They’re adjusting the length to give players enough time to complete these objectives without making matches feel overly long. The goal is to find a sweet spot – keeping matches accessible and enjoyable, while still allowing for longer, more in-depth experiences. Both shorter and longer sessions have their benefits, and they want to offer a good balance of both.
Elsewhere, Embark detailed its plans for voluntary wipes in Arc Raiders.
Arc Raiders launches on October 30 for Xbox, PS5, and PC.
