Shia LaBeouf has discussed his past behavior, the public issues he’s faced, and how he got cast in the controversial film Nymphomaniac directed by Lars von Trier.
The actor, famous for his roles in Even Stevens and Honey Boy, was accused of sexual assault, physical abuse, and verbal abuse by his ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, in 2020. They began dating after meeting on the set of Honey Boy and were together for roughly a year.
Twigs alleged that LaBeouf was physically abusive, including strangling her, intentionally exposing her to a sexually transmitted disease, and shooting stray dogs as method acting for his movie, The Tax Collector.
In a 2022 interview on Jon Bernthal’s podcast, Real Ones, Shia LaBeouf spoke about his past actions, admitting, “I hurt a woman, and in doing so, I’ve hurt many people before her.” He described himself as someone who was focused on personal pleasure and was selfish, dishonest, and inconsiderate. Reflecting on his life now, he feels a need to be helpful and noted a lack of men stepping up to take responsibility within the #MeToo movement.
He acknowledged making serious mistakes that caused significant harm to others, stating he would carry the consequences for the rest of his life. LaBeouf also confessed to being unfaithful and to not informing his sexual partners about his cold sores, which he described as manipulative behavior.
Following recent disclosures, Shia LaBeouf discussed how he was cast as Jerome in the 2013 film Nymphomaniac. The movie, directed by Lars von Trier, focuses on the life and sexual experiences of the main character, Joe, portrayed by Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Shia LaBeouf shared that he sent director Lars von Trier a private video of himself and his then-girlfriend, Karolyn Pho, as part of his audition process. He told Chelsea Handler in an interview with The Guardian that sending the video was how he secured the role.
Shia LaBeouf explained that any explicitly illegal acts in the film would be shown with blurring. Otherwise, he said, everything depicted actually happened. However, it’s still unclear how much consent Park Chan-wook (referred to as ‘Pho’ in the text) gave for the audition, considering the sensitive nature of the scene and LaBeouf’s past behavior involving manipulation.
Shia LaBeouf’s recent statements reveal a complex pattern of striving for success in his career, making unconventional choices in his work, and struggling with serious personal issues. He’s shown how much his personal life and professional choices have influenced each other.
