Recent large-scale layoffs at Amazon have affected both its video game division and the streaming service Twitch. While the total number of job losses isn’t fully known, especially within the game department, Amazon’s online game New World will immediately stop receiving new content updates. However, the game’s servers will continue to operate until at least 2026.
The publisher assured us they would give at least six months’ notice of any changes.
The company announced that after four years of consistent updates and the launch of a new console, they can no longer continue to add new content to the game.
New World recently received a large update that players generally liked, which helped increase the game’s population, though it hasn’t returned to its initial launch numbers. For the first time in years, the community felt the game was finally in a good state. However, a recent announcement has created a sense of uncertainty, and it’s questionable whether the game can maintain its positive momentum given this feeling of potential trouble ahead.
Bloomberg reports that the company plans to keep creating simple, AI-driven games for Amazon Luna. Development of games at its Montreal studio, as well as those being worked on by Crystal Dynamics and Maverick Games, doesn’t appear to be impacted by recent job cuts.
