Tickets aren’t available yet, but you can sign up for updates on the official IMAX website. IMAX hasn’t revealed if the film has been remastered or changed in any way for this release. Since Stanley Kubrick passed away over 25 years ago, the movie will likely be shown in its existing, highest-quality theatrical version.

The Shining is a scary psychological thriller adapted from Stephen King’s 1977 novel. Stanley Kubrick produced and directed the film, working with co-writer Diane Johnson, and it features Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers in leading roles.

The film centers on a man, played by Nicholson, who is battling alcoholism and trying to become a writer. He takes a job caring for a secluded mountain resort during the winter with his wife and son, who has psychic abilities. The loneliness and strange occurrences there slowly drive him insane.

Most of the movie was filmed in England at EMI Elstree Studios, and the sets were designed to look like actual places. Kubrick worked with a small team and often asked for many retakes, which could be tiring for everyone involved. The film also used a new invention called the Steadicam, which helped create a unique and captivating visual experience.

When the film was released in the U.S. in May 1980, opinions were divided. Stephen King, the author of the original novel, actually disliked how different the movie was from his book. It also received two nominations for the very first Golden Raspberry Awards, which recognize the worst films of the year.

An Oscar nomination for Shelley Duvall’s performance was removed in 2022 following reports of difficult treatment she received from director Stanley Kubrick during filming. Despite this, The Shining has gained recognition over the years and is now celebrated as a landmark horror film. In 2018, it was chosen for preservation by the U.S. National Film Registry because of its cultural and historical importance.

The film led to a follow-up movie, Doctor Sleep, which was based on Stephen King’s 2013 novel and released in 2019.
