After becoming known, some performers deliberately stepped away from mainstream Hollywood. They swapped big studio movies and glamorous events for things like theater, writing, activism, or spending time with family. While many continue acting, they often do so independently and outside of Los Angeles. Others have found fulfillment working behind the scenes on projects, or by dedicating themselves to local communities and creative ventures. Here are some inspiring examples of people who’ve redefined success on their own terms.
Rupert Everett

Following successful roles in films like ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and ‘An Ideal Husband,’ he openly discussed being limited by the types of roles offered to him and began taking on fewer mainstream projects. He started working more on European films, writing stories based on real people’s lives, and performing on stage in London. He increasingly prioritized directing and writing his own material, focusing on projects he was truly passionate about. As a result, he appeared less often in big-budget studio comedies and action films, choosing instead to have more creative control over his work.
Richard Chamberlain

Best known for his roles in ‘The Thorn Birds’ and ‘Shōgun,’ he later focused on performing in theater and taking on occasional TV appearances. He openly embraced who he was and preferred acting in regional and touring productions rather than pursuing Hollywood roles. He also narrated audiobooks and participated in events related to his autobiography. While he continued to appear in films occasionally, his main focus shifted to the stage.
Tab Hunter

Best known for his roles in movies like ‘Damn Yankees’ and ‘Battle Cry,’ he stepped away from major film productions later in his life. He then dedicated himself to sharing his own story and helping to preserve classic Hollywood films through archival projects. He spent his time attending film festivals and speaking about film history, focusing on protecting his own cinematic legacy rather than appearing in new films.
T.R. Knight

Following the success of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, he intentionally shifted his focus away from starring in traditional TV shows and returned to performing on stage. He began choosing projects carefully, appearing in limited roles on select series and miniseries, but made theater his priority. He favored collaborative projects that valued artistic quality over the demands of a full-year television schedule, and also dedicated time to supporting arts-related charities and community work.
Wentworth Miller

After becoming well-known for his role in ‘Prison Break,’ he transitioned into writing screenplays and using his platform for advocacy. He wrote scripts for thriller movies and TV shows while openly discussing mental health and the importance of diverse representation. He then began choosing acting roles that were shorter-term, like limited series or guest appearances, instead of committing to long-running franchises. He prioritized projects that fit his personal values and allowed him creative freedom.
Chad Allen

Once a popular child actor on ‘Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,’ he eventually moved away from acting to focus on education and a career in healthcare. While he occasionally appeared at fan events and reunions, he traded Hollywood commitments for a path dedicated to clinical work and academic achievement.
Randy Harrison

Everyone probably knows him from ‘Queer as Folk,’ but honestly, his real love was the stage. He spent years working in regional and New York theater, doing everything from Shakespeare to brand new plays, and even hitting the road with touring companies. TV work came and went, but he was always on stage. Plus, he was really dedicated to teaching and running workshops – a true artist who loved sharing his passion.
Thomas Dekker

Following his initial roles in ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,’ he transitioned to working on independent films and projects that were personally meaningful to him. He began writing and directing low-budget features, often showcasing his work at film festivals. His acting work also focused on independent and specialized genre films. He moved away from traditional television pilots and instead prioritized storytelling where the creative vision came directly from the filmmakers.
Robert Gant

After gaining recognition from ‘Queer as Folk,’ he shifted his focus to producing and advocating for LGBTQ+ issues while continuing to act selectively. He appeared in guest roles on TV, independent films, and projects that centered LGBTQ+ stories. He also dedicated time to supporting legal and community organizations through public speaking and serving on boards. While he occasionally pursued roles in major studio films, his work driven by a strong sense of purpose grew increasingly important.
Daniel Franzese

Following the success of ‘Mean Girls,’ he focused on stand-up comedy, podcasting, and advocating for important causes. He performed comedy shows on tour and worked with groups to fight the stigma surrounding HIV. He still appeared in films and on TV, mostly in independent projects and as a guest star, but his main priorities became connecting with live audiences and getting involved in his community.
Kevin McHale

After starting on ‘Glee,’ he expanded into hosting, creating podcasts, and pursuing music. He began co-creating shows that explore classic TV and fandoms. While he still acted, he chose roles carefully, often appearing in independent films or making guest appearances on streaming platforms. He increasingly focused his creative efforts on audio projects, online content, and live events.
Chris Colfer

I was such a big fan of him on ‘Glee,’ but I loved seeing him really focus on his writing after that! He became a bestselling author and poured his energy into books – it was awesome. He didn’t do a ton of acting after ‘Glee,’ instead he was always out there promoting his books and doing school visits. I remember seeing pictures of him doing readings, book signings, and even running educational programs. It was cool to see him trade in auditioning for book tours and everything that came with being a published author.
Tom Lenk

Best known for his work on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ he also built a career performing comedy on stage, in live shows, and through online sketches. He toured with unique cabaret performances and worked on various independent and festival productions. While he occasionally appeared on TV shows, his main focus was always theater and connecting directly with audiences online, rather than pursuing a career in studio films.
Darryl Stephens

After starring in ‘Noah’s Arc,’ the actor pursued independent films, writing, and smaller creative projects. He also shared his thoughts through essays and participated in discussions about inclusive storytelling. While occasionally appearing on television, he prioritized work that directly benefited his community, always focusing on genuine stories rather than just taking on many roles.
Charlie David

Originally known as an actor and host on ‘Dante’s Cove,’ he transitioned into producing, focusing on documentaries, lifestyle content, and travel/culture programs highlighting LGBTQ+ experiences. He created small production companies to develop these projects, gradually taking on more behind-the-scenes work and fewer on-camera roles. He specialized in creating content for specific audiences and distributing it directly to them.
I’m really excited to hear who you all think we should include! Please share any names that come to mind, and tell me where you first found out about their work – I’m always looking for new artists and creators to follow, and I’d love to know how you discovered them too.
