More and more anime series are being adapted into live-action films and TV shows, and many of these projects are already well underway with confirmed writers, directors, and distributors. The following list features officially announced adaptations – not just fan ideas or unconfirmed reports. For each project, we’ve included its current development status, the key people involved, and where you can expect to see it released. We’ve also highlighted the original anime studios that created these beloved stories.
Live-action ‘My Hero Academia’ Film

Legendary is developing a new project with Shinsuke Sato directing. The script has been worked on by writers known for big franchises. It’s set up to be released worldwide on Netflix after filming. The creator of the original anime series, Kohei Horikoshi, is involved as a consultant and is helping to shape the story. That original anime, produced by Bones, was key to the series’ international success.
Live-action ‘Naruto’ Film

Lionsgate is creating a movie directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who is known for his work on popular superhero films. They’ve been working closely with Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the original series, to accurately portray the characters and world. The project is currently in the scripting and pre-production phases, with plans being made for casting and action sequences. The movie is based on a long-running anime series produced by Studio Pierrot, which has gained a large international following.
Live-action ‘One Punch Man’ Film

Sony Pictures is developing a new movie with Justin Lin directing. The film will be a large-scale action project, and the studio is working with writers who have a track record of creating successful adventure blockbusters. It’s planned for a full release in theaters once filming is finalized. The popular first season of the original anime was created by Madhouse, but subsequent seasons were produced by different studios.
Live-action ‘Gundam’ Feature

Legendary and Netflix are teaming up with Sunrise to create a live-action film featuring giant robots, known as mobile suits. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is in line to direct as the film’s design and world are developed. The movie is planned to premiere on Netflix with a major marketing campaign. Sunrise, the creator of the original anime series, will continue to oversee the brand and ensure its quality.
Live-action ‘Your Name’ Adaptation

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot are creating a new English-language version of the popular story, moving the romantic plot to a different location. The project has gone through several revisions and changes in directors as the filmmakers refine the story and style for a Western audience. They’re also working closely on the visual effects and music to make sure everything fits the script. The original, highly acclaimed anime film was created by CoMix Wave Films.
Live-action ‘Akira’ Project

Warner Bros. has been consistently working on this movie adaptation. Taika Waititi was once set to direct, and the script has gone through several revisions to determine the best approach to casting and the overall story. As a visually ambitious project, the studio has already scouted locations and developed a budget. Their goal is to maintain the large-scale, epic feel of the original anime, which was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha.
Live-action ‘Hellsing’ Film

Amazon Studios is working on a new movie written with help from Derek Kolstad, known for his work on popular action series. The film will be based on a story featuring a hidden organization and a unique style of vampire fighting. Producers are planning to combine real-life stunts with computer-generated effects to create the right atmosphere. The story first gained international popularity through an anime series produced by Gonzo.
Live-action ‘Beyblade’ Feature

Paramount is developing a live-action movie, partnering with Jerry Bruckheimer Films, known for creating exciting, family-friendly action films. The story will bring the competitive elements and iconic imagery from the original anime to life on the big screen. Plans also include creating merchandise to coincide with the film’s release. The anime series, which originally supported a popular toy line, is produced by OLM.
Live-action ‘Robotech’ Film

Sony Pictures is working on a live-action movie based on a classic anime. Producers are securing the rights to all the different parts of the original Japanese series. The project has gone through several writers and directors as they’ve finalized the story. A key focus of the visual effects will be impressive robot transformations and exciting battles in the air. The anime’s origins are with Tatsunoko Production.
New ‘Death Note’ Live-action Series

The creators of a popular supernatural show are now working on a new series for Netflix. Unlike a single movie, this project will be told over multiple episodes, recreating the exciting back-and-forth dynamic of the original story. The team is currently planning the series with a modern setting and establishing its overall feel. It’s important to note this isn’t connected to the previous live-action film and is a separate take on the source material, which was originally animated by Madhouse.
