Disney+ Parts Ways with ‘Doctor Who’ After Two Seasons: Are Horrific Ratings to Blame?

Doctor Who will no longer be available on Disney+. After two seasons, the streaming service and the BBC have decided to end their partnership.

Don’t worry, the Doctor isn’t going anywhere! A Christmas special penned by Russell T. Davies is planned for 2026, and work on a brand new season is already underway.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this! Disney+ and BBC One are teaming up for a Doctor Who spin-off called ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea.’ From what I understand, it’s going to center around UNIT – you know, the military folks who often help the Doctor – and they’re facing off against the Sea Devils in a potential global crisis. Apparently, Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, and Alexander Devrient are all set to star, which is a fantastic cast! I’m definitely adding this to my watchlist.

Lindsay Salt, BBC’s Head of Drama, expressed gratitude to Disney+ for their partnership over the last two seasons, and for their collaboration on the upcoming series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’.

The BBC is still dedicated to Doctor Who, one of its most popular shows. We’re thrilled Russell T Davies will be writing another special Christmas episode for 2026. Fans can rest assured that the Doctor will be back, and we’ll share details about the next series soon, guaranteeing the TARDIS will remain a key part of the BBC’s programming.

The announcement follows Ncuti Gatwa’s departure after season 15, which concluded with his Doctor transforming into Billie Piper – a twist that surprised a lot of fans. This has led to questions about how involved Disney+ will be going forward, leaving the show’s future a bit unclear, though many viewers anticipated changes.

I was relieved to hear the show was getting another season, but honestly, it seems like fewer people are tuning in. I saw a report from Deadline that the first four episodes of season 15 only averaged around 3.1 million viewers, according to the official ratings. It’s a bit concerning, to be honest.

Viewership for the current season of the show is down compared to previous seasons. It averaged 3.9 million viewers, a decrease from the 5 million who watched Jodie Whittaker’s last season. While the season started with 3.6 million viewers for the first episode, it fell to 2.8 million by the fourth episode. To put that in perspective, episode four of the previous season had 4.5 million viewers.

Okay, so there’s been a lot of chatter about why viewership is down, and a lot of fingers are pointing at the show seemingly trying to be ‘woke’ with its storylines. Honestly, it’s hard to say if that’s the real issue. The BBC insists Ncuti Gatwa wasn’t fired, but they’re being awfully tight-lipped about whether he decided to leave. His team isn’t saying anything at all, which just adds to the mystery.

Despite recent changes and difficulties, Doctor Who is continuing with new adventures and plans. The BBC assures fans that the Doctor’s travels through time and space will go on for many years to come.
