Okay, movie fans, this is a surprise! Quentin Tarantino, usually behind the camera, is actually in front of it this time! Variety reports he’s joined the cast of an indie film called Only What We Carry, directed by Jamie Adams. It’ll be interesting to see him as an actor – definitely a different side of the filmmaking legend we’re used to!
The project started when Adams and Tarantino spoke on a Zoom call. The conversation persuaded Tarantino to briefly return from retirement for a quick, inexpensive film shoot.
The film was shot in Deauville, France, in late September over just six days. Instead of following a strict script, the actors largely improvised their performances.
I just finished watching a really intriguing film set on the Normandy coast. It centers around Julian Johns, a teacher brilliantly portrayed by Simon Pegg, who’s confronted by his former student, Charlotte Levant – played with a captivating intensity by Sofia Boutella. She’s back to deal with a past they both thought was buried, and honestly, the tension is palpable. It’s a story about reckoning and the long shadows our choices cast, and I was immediately hooked.
In the film, Quentin Tarantino portrays John Percy, a friend from the past whose sudden appearance creates drama for everyone. The cast includes Charlotte Gainsbourg as Josephine, who is fiercely protective of her sister, Liam Hellmann as Vincent, an artist struggling with his emotions and allegiances, and musician Lizzy McAlpine making her film debut as Jacqueline, a dancer who has a profound impact on the other characters.
Simon Pegg found working on “Only What We Carry” to be a revitalizing and imaginative experience. He described it as a deeply satisfying and fun project, reminiscent of the films of Eric Rohmer and Mike Leigh, and praised the talented group of people involved, according to a statement to Variety.
Director Jamie Adams, who’s known for his natural and spontaneous filmmaking style in movies like She Is Love and Wild Honey Pie!, said this film was a long-held ambition.
Adams said she’s always wanted to film a movie in Normandy with a look and feel similar to those by director Eric Rohmer. She envisioned working with a talented international team, and she’s thrilled that, by making a truly independent film, that vision has become a reality.
Charles Benoin, Liam Hellmann, and Jouri Smit produced the film under their production companies, Atlas Pictures and Easy of the Eye.
Although Quentin Tarantino has often mentioned retiring after his tenth movie, Only What We Carry reveals he isn’t fully done with filmmaking. He’s shifted from directing to acting, taking on a new creative role in a small, unconventional project.
