
Bruce Nesmith, a long-time developer at Bethesda Game Studios known for his work on games like Skyrim, recently shared that the now-famous ‘bucket-on-head’ robbery glitch wasn’t a planned feature. It happened accidentally, but has become an iconic part of the game even 14 years after Skyrim’s release.
In a recent podcast with FRVR, Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo (known as Nesmith) revealed that the now-famous bucket-on-the-head theft exploit in Skyrim was a complete accident. The developers never intentionally tested or even considered whether it was possible to place buckets on NPCs’ heads during development. He stated, “That was completely an accident… We didn’t even try to put a bucket on anybody’s head! It didn’t come out until the game was released!”
Nesmith understands the technical reason why the ‘bucket-on-head’ trick works – it essentially makes the game character unable to see a player stealing. But despite knowing how it works, he was still surprised to see players discover it. It’s funny to imagine the game developers watching fan videos and seeing a shopkeeper with a bucket over their head while someone steals cheese!
This is just one example of what makes Skyrim’s world so captivating – a world that, despite being known for its glitches, has remained popular for over a decade, even surprising its creators at Bethesda. As Nesmith points out, the game uniquely makes players feel like they are actually in the world of Tamriel, not just watching a story unfold.
According to a former Bethesda developer, creating a character allows you to develop a sense of self and freedom, fostering personal growth. It’s about feeling truly present as that character – establishing a strong connection and a sense of being. “This is me. I am here,” they explain, capturing the feeling of embodiment.
He has a point – even without all the mods available for Skyrim today, the original 2011 game offers a huge amount of content. I’ve spent countless hours playing and still find new things to do.
