Civilization 7: Tides of Power featuring Blackbeard will be free to claim after release

Okay, so Firaxis just dropped some news about the next DLC for Civilization 7: Tides of Power, and I’m pretty hyped! We’re getting Blackbeard – yeah, the Blackbeard – and Sayyida Al Hurra as new leaders to play as. Plus, they’re adding a bunch of new civs: Tonga, the Republic of Pirates (seriously cool!), the Ottomans, and Iceland. I can’t wait to try them all out!

The Great Lighthouse and Nan Madol are now recognized as Great Wonders, and the Great Blue Hole and Mapu’a Vaea Blowholes have been added as Natural Wonders.

Okay, so I’m super hyped to announce that the first part of the new expansion drops on November 4th, 2025! And the best part? If you already own Civilization 7, it’s totally free until January 5th, 2026. The second half of the expansion is coming in December 2025, and it’s also included in that free offer. Seriously, a whole new chunk of the game, free for existing players – can’t beat that!

The day before the new expansion launches, we’re releasing a gameplay update focused on naval features. This update introduces the Harbor, a new building for storing resources, and the Privateer, a unit that allows you to raid other civilizations even if you’re not at war with them.

The oceans are getting some changes too! You’ll now find crabs, turtles, and cowries as resources in the water, alongside Pitch on land. New Atoll terrain can appear on deep ocean tiles, creating obstacles to movement, and Lotus terrain can grow on lakes, boosting your food and gold income. Plus, you’ll be able to work ocean tiles during the Modern Age – or even earlier if you’re playing as Hawai’i.

Ship battles are being redesigned. Ships are now split into two types: lighter, close-combat ships, and heavier ships that attack from a distance.

Ed Beach, the lead designer for Civilization 7, shared that the team is exploring options to allow players to stick with one civilization for the entire game. It seems they’re responding to player feedback and are adjusting many of the new features in Civilization 7.
