Margot Robbie is reportedly in talks to star in a remake of the horror film American Psycho, playing a female version of the notorious serial killer, Patrick Bateman.
The Sun reports that 35-year-old Australian actress is a strong contender to star in a new version of the 2000 movie, originally known for Christian Bale’s role as a violent, ambitious professional.
The film, adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel, sparked controversy upon its release because of its intense violence and cynical portrayal of wealth and excess in the 1980s.
According to a source at The Sun, the original novel and movie by Brett Easton Ellis were quite controversial. Those involved in the new remake considered changing the story by casting a woman in the main role originally played by Bateman.
The novel initially faced criticism for its portrayal of women, but the author believed a female killer would offer a fresh perspective on the story’s crimes.
According to a source, this role would give Robbie a chance to really demonstrate her acting skills, but the project is still being developed and isn’t confirmed yet.
Mary Harron’s original film centered on Patrick Bateman, a man leading a secret life as both a successful New York banker and a violent killer. Christian Bale’s powerful acting and the movie’s dark comedy resonated with some viewers, while others felt it lacked depth and simply mirrored the materialism it criticized.
Despite its controversial nature, American Psycho gained a dedicated following and launched Christian Bale to stardom. In 2024, news emerged that Lionsgate was planning a remake, with Luca Guadagnino set to direct. The studio has been developing the reboot for some time, and executives are excited to see Guadagnino’s vision for the film.
