Michael B. Jordan shared that his passion for anime heavily influenced how the fight scenes were created in Creed III.
In an interview with IGN, Michael B. Jordan discussed his desire to revitalize the boxing scenes in the Rocky and Creed films. He explained that, wanting to avoid repeating familiar tropes, he drew inspiration from various anime series he enjoyed as a child, including Hajime no Ippo, Megalo Box, Naruto, and My Hero Academia, to create a unique style for the fight choreography.
Jordan explained that he wasn’t just attracted to the exciting parts of these shows, but also how they portrayed connections between people.
He explained that the characters have a strong, natural fighting spirit built on their relationships and connections. He focused on mirroring this with the bonds within his own character’s family and friendships, weaving those themes into many of the fight scenes.
Jordan recently told the BBC that anime is special because it often reveals what characters are thinking and feeling, even in the middle of action-packed fights. He explained that while characters might be physically battling to win or even kill each other, their internal emotional struggles are often portrayed as a calmer, more introspective conversation. He believes this is because fighting is sometimes the only way these characters can truly connect and communicate their feelings.
Jordan revealed his favorite anime shows, mentioning several well-known series that have gained popularity in Western countries. His list included titles like Naruto, Dragon Ball, Bleach, One Piece, Hunter X Hunter, My Hero Academia, Hajime no Ippo, and Megalo Box.
Michael B. Jordan recommends these five anime series – One Piece, Dragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, and Hunter x Hunter – as a great starting point for new fans, and it’s hard to disagree! It’s a fantastic list of popular and influential shows.

Jordan views anime not just as fun to watch, but as a powerful influence on how stories are told, how emotions are conveyed, and how action sequences are created. He’s using this inspiration in Creed III to make the fight scenes more exciting and to deepen the emotional bonds between the characters.
