On Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, John Oliver criticized President Trump for recently demolishing part of the White House – the East Wing. Trump ordered the demolition to build a $250 million ballroom, a decision that Oliver strongly criticized.
Oliver quipped that the images were upsetting, particularly knowing they were for a lavish ballroom resembling a ‘Med Spa Versailles.’ He then pointed out that the symbolic ‘demolition of the White House’ was only the beginning of a busy week for Donald Trump, calling it an obvious, yet understated, preview of things to come.
The host then discussed Trump’s finances, revealing a report that the former president sought $230 million from the Justice Department to cover the costs of federal investigations. Oliver pointed out that Trump had stated he would donate any settlement money to “charity or something,” as he put it.
Oliver also discussed several questionable decisions made by Trump, such as using an AI-generated video to attack protesters, halting trade talks with Canada because of a television commercial, and providing a $20 billion loan to Argentina to promote policies favored by libertarians.
Oliver was most surprised by Trump’s authorization of military attacks on boats suspected of carrying drugs into the U.S. He pointed out that, “Despite the administration offering no proof to support its accusations, the usual way to handle these boats is to stop them and arrest the people on board, not kill them without any legal process.”
He also stated that Trump intends to target and eliminate suspected drug traffickers within Venezuela, even without permission from Congress. Trump reportedly said, “We’re just going to kill people. They’re going to be, like, dead.”
Oliver ended his remarks by voicing his anger at the lack of action from Congress and the courts. He stated that, in addition to numerous other concerning actions – including damage to the White House, attempts to misuse the Justice Department for personal gain, and sharing offensive content – the president is now acting as judge, jury, and executioner regarding foreign citizens. Oliver expressed frustration that neither Congress nor the courts appear willing to intervene, arguing that this violates the principle of checks and balances in the U.S. government.
