Coraline Creators Unveil Magical New Stop-Motion Fantasy ‘Wildwood’ With a New Trailer

I’m so excited! The people who made Coraline are working on a new stop-motion movie called Wildwood. It’s directed by Travis Knight and made by Laika, the studio that’s famous for its incredibly detailed and beautiful, handmade animation. I can’t wait to see it!

Inspired by Colin Meloy’s 2011 novel, the story centers on Prue McKeel and her classmate Curtis Mehlberg. They venture into a magical and perilous forest to save Prue’s baby brother after he’s been kidnapped.

The movie boasts an impressive voice cast, featuring stars like Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Jacob Tremblay, Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tantoo Cardinal, Tom Waits, and Richard E. Grant.

The story of Wildwood started developing over ten years ago. Soon after the book came out in 2011, Laika Studios expressed interest in making it into a movie.

The project took a long time to get off the ground due to its scope and complexity. It wasn’t until 2021 that the studio formally revealed the film, with confirmation that it would be directed by Knight and written by Chris Butler.

Filming happened at Laika’s studio in Portland, Oregon, where the company is located. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel used Laika’s unique combination of real sets and animation to create the story’s forest setting.

In a recent interview, Knight revealed that Wildwood was the most ambitious and difficult film the studio has ever undertaken. He explained they had to significantly develop their creative and technical abilities—and improve their storytelling—to properly adapt the book, citing the project’s large scale, which includes epic battles, aerial sequences, and intricate character work.

The game Wildwood, previously scheduled to launch in 2025, is now anticipated to be released in 2026. As of now, a publisher or distributor hasn’t been confirmed.

Blending fantasy, excitement, and genuine emotion, Wildwood appears poised to carry on Laika’s tradition of beautiful and moving films. Known for hits like Coraline and Kubo and the Two Strings, the studio seems to be reaching new heights of creativity with this latest project.
