If you’re planning to watch the award-winning movie Parasite on HBO Max, you’ll need to do so before October 31st, as it will no longer be available after that date.
Bong Joon Ho’s 2019 South Korean thriller was a huge international success, famously winning the Best Picture Oscar. It made history as the first film not originally in English to ever win that award.
The movie Parasite follows a struggling family who gradually inserts themselves into the home and lives of a much wealthier family. Starring Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, and Lee Jung-eun, the film is a darkly funny and suspenseful story that also offers a critique of social inequality, contributing to its international success.
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin-won co-wrote the screenplay, which was based on a play Bong wrote in 2013. Bong has mentioned that the film was inspired by the 1960 Korean film The Housemaid and a true story from the 1930s involving sisters Christine and Léa Papin.
The movie was filmed between May and September 2018. Hong Kyung-pyo handled the cinematography, Yang Jin-mo edited the film, and Jung Jae-il created the music.
The movie was a major success at the Oscars, winning four awards, such as Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.
Parasite earned numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe and BAFTA award for international films, and made history as the first foreign-language film to win a Screen Actors Guild Award for its ensemble cast. In 2025, The New York Times declared it the best film of the 21st century to date, recognizing its enduring influence.
Those who enjoyed the movie Parasite will be pleased to hear that an HBO limited series based on it is also in the works, with initial development beginning earlier this year.
