Camila Mendes, known for her role as Teela in Masters of the Universe, recently discussed the upcoming 2026 movie. She believes it successfully blends comedy and more serious moments, hitting the perfect tone.
Mendes on Joining the Franchise
Mendes shared that she’d always hoped to play a superhero, and staying in shape helped prepare her for the role. However, she ultimately decided to join the project because she loved the story and how it was going to be made, not just the superhero genre itself.
Mendes explained that the work is funny without being only a comedy. He praised the creators for finding the right balance, and believes audiences will enjoy it.

A Balanced Tone for a New Generation
Many dedicated fans were unsure how Masters of the Universe would work as a movie, but comments from the director suggest it will be a satisfying adaptation. While the franchise is known for its exaggerated characters, vibrant stories, and 1980s appeal, the director promises the film won’t simply be a comical spoof.
Director Travis Knight seems to be going for a more realistic take on the story – enjoyable, but respectful of the original material. Shawn Mendes’ comments about the film’s “strong execution” imply the creators are successfully balancing a playful tone with believability.
