It seems like Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, is pulling out all the stops for the final season. He’s continuing to make the show’s political themes very direct and overt, rather than subtle.
Following the season finale of Gen V and its ties to the upcoming fifth season of The Boys, creator Eric Kripke revealed that the final season will center around a full-scale rebellion against a tyrannical government. He described it as a “true underground resistance,” a phrase that suggests the show will continue to reflect his critical views on figures like Donald Trump.
Kripke Reveals What The Boys Season 5 Is About
When THR asked who Homelander will be up against in the final season, Kripke said:
A lot of people want to get revenge on him – seriously. Butcher is definitely leading the charge, but others like Stan Edgar, Marie, Annie, and Huey are also involved. They’re trying to organize a strong opposition, but they’re facing overwhelming odds. The entire country seems to adore Homelander, and there are hundreds of superheroes everywhere who have power over the police. It’s a real, hidden resistance movement fighting against a tyrannical government, and it’s unlike anything else happening globally.
Kripke’s clear statement – that there’s “no comparison or parallel” – reveals his purpose. The creator of Supernatural has often said Homelander was based on Donald Trump, and it seems Season 5 will emphasize this even more, shaping the show into a story about opposing Trump’s policies.
The Politics Behind The Boys
For years, Kripke has been using the show to express his views on current political issues, including the dangers of authoritarianism, how the media can be used to mislead, and the rise of conservative populism. He’s admitted the show is intentionally political and that his own beliefs heavily influence the stories he tells.
The show The Boys is becoming more direct with its themes, and this might be why fewer people are watching. In a recent interview with The Wrap, creator Eric Kripke admitted that some spin-offs, like Diabolical, won’t be coming back because not enough people watched them. The future of Gen V also depends on how well Season 2 performs in terms of viewership.
Viewers have been disappointed by the show’s change in tone, moving away from clever satire towards opinionated storytelling. A recent example that sparked outrage was a scene in Gen V where a goat named “Elon” was killed, seen by many as a heavy-handed statement.
Franchise Fatigue Setting In
While The Boys was a huge hit for Amazon, creator Eric Kripke has suggested the show is winding down. Season 5 will be the last season of the main storyline, and the future of potential spin-offs like Vought Rising and The Boys: Mexico is currently unclear.
Now that the showrunner has said the final season will focus on his personal views on fighting against injustice, it remains to be seen if viewers will continue watching. Some worry that pushing a political agenda might end the show sooner than if it had continued with its original storyline.
