The reports were accurate: Robert Kirkman is developing an adult animated series based on his Energon Universe comics, and production is now underway.
Skybound Entertainment, the company co-founded by Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead and Invincible, is teaming up with Hasbro Entertainment to create a new animated series called Energon Universe. This series will combine characters and storylines from Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Void Rivals. Joe Henderson, known for his work on Lucifer, will be the writer and showrunner. The creators are currently pitching the series to streaming services and television networks.
Adult Animation Like Invincible
The new Energon Universe series, while based on popular Hasbro characters, is aimed at adult audiences, much like Robert Kirkman’s Invincible. Deadline reports that the series will have a mature and realistic tone, differing from the lighter, more playful style of the original 1980s cartoons.
As a movie fan, it’s really interesting to see Hasbro trying something new. It seems like they want to explore more mature stories with their brands – think deeper themes and content for older audiences – but they’re smart about it. They’re not abandoning what already works with kids and families; they’re just adding another layer, which could open up a whole new world of possibilities for their properties on the big screen.
A Comic Universe Built For TV
As a huge comic book and movie fan, I was really surprised and excited when the Energon Universe launched in 2023 with Void Rivals. The biggest shock? Seeing Jetfire from Transformers show up! It quickly became clear this wasn’t just a one-off, though. It’s a fully connected universe, bringing Transformers and G.I. Joe together in a single, shared story, and it’s all being guided by Kirkman and his Skybound team. It’s a really cool concept and I’m eager to see where it goes!
I was so excited when this comic book series took off! It’s been a massive success – over 7 million copies have been sold worldwide! And it wasn’t just popular with fans, either. The first issues of Transformers, Void Rivals, and G.I. Joe all broke sales records, which is amazing! To top it all off, Transformers even won two Edgar Awards in 2024, which is incredible recognition for the writing!
A new ongoing G.I. Joe comic series will begin this November, continuing after the previously released limited-run stories focused on individual characters.
Joe Henderson Leading the Show
Joe Henderson, the creative force behind the upcoming series, has a proven track record of successfully adapting comic books for television. Having previously guided Netflix’s Lucifer, as well as working on shows like White Collar and Almost Human, Henderson’s involvement signals that the Energon Universe series will prioritize compelling character development and a continuous, unfolding story, rather than simply relying on action sequences.
What About the Live-Action Movies?
Although Kirkman’s Energon Universe is designed for adult animation fans, Hasbro and Paramount are still working on live-action Transformers movies and shows.
A new movie combining the worlds of Transformers and G.I. Joe is reportedly being developed. There’s also talk that Michael Bay might be involved as a producer or director.
