Keira Knightley recently opened up about her challenging experiences as a young actress in an interview with The Times of London.
The actress, who became well-known at age 18 thanks to her role in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, said she faced constant and aggressive attention from the paparazzi, making everyday life incredibly difficult.
Knightley described the harassment she experienced as primarily catcalling and whistling. She also mentioned occasional instances of more aggressive verbal abuse, especially when she was with male family members or boyfriends. She explained that the harassers seemed to be intentionally trying to provoke a violent reaction from those around them, likely with the intention of filing a lawsuit.
She explained that this kind of aggressive behavior sometimes created dangerous scenarios, like photographers pushing people off the road to get better pictures. Knightley remembered thinking, after Britney Spears shaved her head, that it seemed to encourage even more extreme and reckless behavior: “It was like, ‘Great – now we can push them to do something completely wild.’”
To get through a difficult time, Knightley explained she simplified her life drastically. She started wearing the same outfit—three pairs of the same jeans, a striped T-shirt, and boots—every day, and she got rid of the rest of her clothes.
She explained that she would refuse to move to annoy photographers. Once, she remained completely still for five full hours. She reasoned that they couldn’t get a good picture if she was always wearing the same outfit and standing in the same spot, saying it would become repetitive and uninteresting. ‘They can only write ‘She’s wearing the same clothes’ so many times with a picture of me just standing there,’ she said. ‘It gets boring.’
The intense attention from being famous led Keira Knightley to briefly think about giving up acting. With encouragement from her family, she moved to London and started traveling through Europe by train, trying to avoid notice. She described how she’d blend in by being deliberately unnoticeable: “Museums and trains are places people don’t expect to see celebrities. I made sure to look a bit messy, avoid eye contact, and basically try to disappear into the background.”
Keira Knightley has spoken about the difficult experience of being a young woman in the public spotlight. She described it as a harsh period, explaining that she was often stalked and unfairly held responsible for the actions of her stalkers.
