Mortal Kombat II Release Date Moves Up One Week to May 8, 2026

Warner Bros. has changed the release date for Mortal Kombat II again, but this time it’s good news for fans! The movie will now come out on May 8, 2026, a week earlier than originally planned.

The movie was originally scheduled to come out on October 24, 2025, but the studio pushed back the release date earlier this year. They said this was a planned move to give the film a better chance to succeed in theaters during the summer months.

The recent release on May 8th confirms the strategy, establishing Mortal Kombat II as a key action movie kicking off the summer of 2026.

About the Sequel

New Line Cinema’s Mortal Kombat II picks up where the first film left off, showing Earthrealm’s heroes fighting desperately to prevent the evil Shao Kahn from taking over.

The cast includes:

  • Karl Urban as Johnny Cage
  • Lewis Tan as Cole Young
  • Adeline Rudolph as Kitana
  • Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi / Scorpion
  • Joe Taslim as Bi-Han / Noob Saibot
  • Tadanobu Asano as Raiden
  • Chin Han, Mehcad Brooks, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Tati Gabrielle, Damon Herriman, and others

Simon McQuoid directed the film, returning to the role, and Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay. Todd Garner, James Wan, Toby Emmerich, E. Bennett Walsh, and McQuoid all served as producers. The movie is based on the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

Why the Move?

Originally, Mortal Kombat II was scheduled for October 2025 but moved to May 2026 to avoid competing with other films released in the busy fall season and the typically slow box office around Halloween. Now, with a release date of May 8th, the film has a better chance of a strong opening, kicking off the summer movie season before the Memorial Day rush.

The creators discussed the upcoming sequel at New York Comic Con, calling it a large-scale summer movie. They highlighted that it was specifically made for IMAX and promised more action, higher casualties, and a more expansive story spanning several worlds.

Changing the release date also moves the film further away from the May 22nd release of Disney’s new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Official Release

Mortal Kombat II will be released in theaters and IMAX on May 8, 2026, in North America and May 6 internationally.
