Netflix To Develop Movies and TV Shows Based on Catan

Okay, so Netflix is really going all-in on turning video games into shows, and their next project is based on Catan! I’m super excited – I loved building settlements and trading resources in that game, and I’m curious to see how they’ll adapt it for TV.

The popular board game will be made into movies and TV shows, and the streaming service has secured the exclusive rights to do so, Asmodee, the game’s publisher, announced on Tuesday.

I first discovered Catan – originally called The Settlers of Catan – back when it was created by Klaus Teuber in 1995, and it quickly became one of my favorite games! It’s become incredibly popular all over the world, and it’s easy to see why.

The game unfolds on an island where players compete to build settlements, trade goods, and stay alive, all while managing scarce resources, forming and breaking alliances, and avoiding a troublesome robber. Now, this exciting world is being adapted into a movie.

Netflix and Asmodee are teaming up to create both live-action and animated series and films based on the popular game Catan, offering fresh perspectives on its universe.

The upcoming content will feature both scripted and unscripted shows based on the game’s ideas. Darren Kyman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studio), and Guido and Benjamin Teuber (sons of the game’s creator, Klaus Teuber) will be producing these projects, alongside Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment.

As a gamer, I was stoked to hear that Catan is reaching even more people! Thomas Koegler, the CEO of Asmodee, said it’s awesome that millions have already enjoyed the game, and for a lot of us, it was our first step into the world of modern board games. He’s really excited to bring Catan to a whole new audience so they can experience how cool it is. It just proves that board games are a huge part of pop culture now, and something everyone can enjoy at home.

Jinny Howe, who leads scripted series for Netflix in the U.S. and Canada, believes the Catan project has a lot of potential for compelling stories. She explained that the game’s strategic gameplay is naturally full of dramatic possibilities. Netflix is excited to collaborate on various formats – including TV series, movies, animation, and video games – to appeal to both longtime ‘Settlers of Catan’ fans and those new to the world.

Netflix and Asmodee are expanding their relationship. They’ve collaborated before, including on the French film Family Pack, which was inspired by Asmodee’s card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow. Asmodee has also developed board games based on popular Netflix series like Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Bridgerton.

Get ready, CATAN fans! The popular board game by Klaus Teuber is heading to Netflix. For the first time, the world of CATAN will be adapted into a variety of shows and movies, including both live-action and animated formats, as well as unscripted content.

As a huge Catan fan, I was so excited to hear about the Netflix series! The people now running Catan, Benjamin and Guido Teuber (Klaus Teuber’s sons), explained it’s something their dad always dreamed of. They said when Klaus first created Catan thirty years ago, he envisioned a world where people connected through trading, building, and settling – not just around a game table, but in life too. It’s amazing to see that vision finally expanding beyond the board game!

We’re excited to partner with Netflix, bringing Catan to a new audience. For thirty years, Catan has brought people together, and we’re thrilled it will now inspire stories around the world, honoring the creative spirit and focus on connection that our father envisioned.

Netflix is increasingly producing shows and movies based on video games. They’ve had hits with series like Arcane and Castlevania, and are currently developing adaptations of popular games including Assassin’s Creed, Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Clue, Monopoly, and Gears of War.

Now that Catan is coming to Netflix, the streaming service appears to be expanding its efforts to adapt video game stories, starting with building trades and settlements.
