Hulu is bringing back Prison Break with a new series developed by Elgin James.
This new series centers around a former soldier who takes a job as a prison guard in one of the nation’s toughest prisons. She has a personal reason for being there: she’s determined to show how much she’ll risk to safeguard someone she loves.
Emily Browning plays the lead role of Cassidy. The film also features Drake Rodger as Tommy, Lukas Gage as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas as Michael “Ghost,” JR Bourne as Junior, Georgie Flores as Andrea, and Myles Bullock as Darius “Red.”
The pilot episode starred Priscilla Delgado, Ray McKinnon, Margo Martindale, Donal Logue, Lili Taylor, and Sylvester Powell.
Sources say James’ show takes place in the same world as the original series by Paul Scheuring, but will feature a fresh cast of characters.
Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, the original stars of the series, likely won’t be involved in the new show. The spinoff was initially revealed towards the end of 2023 and began pilot production in December.
The original Prison Break series followed brothers Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield. Lincoln was wrongly convicted and sentenced to death, so Michael devised a complex plan to break him out of prison.
The show proved to be both a hit with critics and audiences, largely thanks to its gripping stories. It was produced by a team including Scheuring, Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal H. Moritz, and Brett Ratner, who also directed the first episode. The show’s memorable theme song, created by Ramin Djawadi, was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2006.
Fox initially rejected Prison Break in 2003. However, the network decided to give it a chance in 2004 after shows like 24 and Lost demonstrated that viewers enjoyed complicated stories that unfolded over time.
Because the first season was so popular, the show continued for several more seasons, receiving awards and nominations. The show’s success also led to related content like a mobile game, online episodes, a magazine, and a novel, which broadened its reach.
More episodes were later released as a movie called The Final Break. While a fifth season came out in 2017, plans for a sixth season fell through, and Wentworth Miller stated in 2020 that he wouldn’t be returning to the show.
The new Hulu version will tell a fresh story, but it will still have the same thrilling and suspenseful feel as the original.
