In a move that could only be described as a bold strategy, the local government of British Columbia has decided to cut off new crypto mining connections to the hydroelectric grid. The reason? A rather “unprecedented” demand for electricity that has left everyone scratching their heads-mostly because it’s not exactly clear why crypto miners should get the blame for all of this energy drama. 🙄
On Monday, the British Columbia (BC) government unleashed a flurry of new legislation that’s designed to “stimulate the economy” (as they so eloquently put it) and help the crown-owned BC Hydro utility juggle its power load. Well, apparently, the electric grid isn’t just for keeping your lights on anymore. It’s got its own idea of who should get priority, and surprise, it’s not you…or the miners. 💡
“Look,” said the government in their statement, “There are some big opportunities in British Columbia’s traditional resource sectors, like mining (wait, isn’t that crypto?), natural gas, and LNG. But we’re also thinking about the emerging sectors. Things like data centres and artificial intelligence (AI). Success for these fancy projects? Simple. They depend on having access to reliable and clean electricity.” And they can’t help it if crypto miners don’t fit that bill. 😏
And here’s the kicker: in a stunning display of decisiveness (or perhaps just running out of patience), BC will be enforcing strict “limits on power available for data centres and AI” and-wait for it-permanently banning new connections for crypto miners to the hydro grid starting in fall 2025. 🌍
Charlotte Mitha, president and CEO of BC Hydro, made it clear: “We’re seeing this unprecedented demand from both old-school industries and all these new, shiny ones. Our strategy gives BC Hydro the power to manage this…you know…responsibly, while keeping the grid reliable and energy affordable.” And it seems that crypto miners, with their insatiable thirst for electricity, are just too much for this plan. 😬
BC Hydro, which is basically the electricity overlord for over 5 million residents in the region, is giving a lot of love to data centres and AI, and none to crypto. The government is super excited to help these sectors “grow in a manner that results in the greatest benefit to the people of British Columbia.” But when it comes to crypto, well… they’re not feeling the same love. 😆
The latest government update calls the crypto miners’ energy consumption “disproportionate,” with an economy benefit that’s questionable at best-hence the cold shoulder. Ouch.
Crypto mining analysts say otherwise
But here’s where it gets interesting. The crypto community, like a group of heroes fighting for their honor, isn’t taking this ban lying down. Some have been fiercely defending the noble art of crypto mining, battling the bad rap that it’s some kind of energy-hungry monster. Environmentalist Daniel Batten, for instance, has been working overtime to change the public’s perception, arguing that Bitcoin mining can actually be part of the solution to climate action. But who’s listening? 🧐
The Outright Ban: Years in the Making
And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The outright ban on crypto mining has been a long time coming. While other provinces, like Vancouver, have been rolling out the red carpet for Bitcoin, BC has been decidedly more grumpy. In December 2022, the government imposed an 18-month ban to “figure things out,” but now we see the result: the full-on banhammer. 🛑
At this point, it’s hard to say what this means for established mining operations in BC, like Bitfarms and Iren, who’ve been setting up shop with Bitcoin mining operations or AI-focused data centers. Will they be shut down or find a way to work around this ban? Stay tuned, folks. It’s going to be a wild ride. 🚀
