Netflix France got a lot of attention online after sharing a picture of Black Adam (played by Dwayne Johnson) going head-to-head with Superman (played by Henry Cavill). They asked fans, “Who wins?” and then announced that Black Adam is now available to stream.
Okay, this post totally blew up the DC fandom – and it’s easy to see why! It came right after Zack Snyder was dropping these awesome Instagram hints about Henry Cavill potentially returning as Superman, and even a glimpse of Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke. It just got everyone talking again!

Netflix Teases Sparks SnyderVerse Speculation
Fans are buzzing about when Netflix made its announcement. It came only a few days after Zack Snyder started posting new black-and-white photos from his DC movies, taken with his Leica camera. This followed reports – including our exclusive news about James Gunn potentially leaving his position as head of DC Studios due to the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery – adding to the speculation.
After Zack Snyder shared posts featuring Henry Cavill as Superman and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, fans are speculating that a recent Netflix announcement might signal larger plans, particularly with ongoing rumors about Netflix possibly acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery.
Because Zack Snyder has been collaborating with Netflix on Rebel Moon and other films, many fans think it’s possible his shared DC universe – often called the ‘SnyderVerse’ – could be revived if Netflix were to acquire Warner Bros.
Black Adam Outperformed Gunn’s Superman
Recent data shows Black Adam was more popular on HBO Max than James Gunn’s Superman, attracting more viewers and receiving a more positive reaction.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s 2022 superhero film was also very popular on Netflix, regularly appearing among the platform’s top 10 most-watched movies worldwide.
In contrast, James Gunn’s Superman film didn’t perform well in theaters and didn’t attract a large audience on Max. Similarly, his series Peacemaker saw a significant drop in viewership and has been canceled after two seasons.
Netflix is now actively advertising Black Adam, which includes Henry Cavill as Superman, leading fans to believe the previous version of the DC Universe may still have a future.
Snyder Could Return — But Only For The Dark Knight Returns
Apparently, everyone—including Zack Snyder—has accepted that the SnyderVerse is over and moved on.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Zack would only consider returning to work on DC projects if it was to adapt The Dark Knight Returns, the iconic story by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson featuring an aged Batman and Superman.
If Netflix were to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Zack Snyder could potentially return to finish his story, maybe even including Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill for a last appearance as their characters.
Industry sources say Netflix has dismissed the possibility of acquiring Warner Bros., but Zack Snyder’s involvement might change things and make a deal possible.
