Adam Driver had ideas for continuing the Star Wars story with his character, Ben Solo. He recently shared that he proposed a spinoff movie to Lucasfilm and Disney, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, but it wasn’t developed.
Adam Driver has expressed his continued interest in returning to the Star Wars universe. He told the Associated Press that he’d been discussing a potential return since 2021, and had conversations with Kathleen Kennedy about it. He stated he would be eager to reprise his role if the project had a strong director and a compelling story, adding that he enjoyed playing the character.
The Hunt for Ben Solo
I was so excited to learn about this new project, The Hunt for Ben Solo! Apparently, Adam Driver worked with the incredible Steven Soderbergh on it, and from what Adam’s said, the script by Scott Z. Burns was just phenomenal – he even called it one of the coolest he’s ever read, which is high praise coming from him!
The planned sequel to The Rise of Skywalker would have shown how Ben Solo could have lived and what happened to him after seemingly dying. Adam Driver said Lucasfilm was enthusiastic about the concept and fully supported their vision.
Driver explained that after they showed the script to Lucasfilm, the team was thrilled with the positive reaction. Lucasfilm fully grasped their vision and the reasoning behind the project.
However, when the idea was presented to Disney leaders Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, they decided to cancel the project. According to Adam Driver, they couldn’t accept the idea that the character Ben Solo was still alive, and the decision was final.
Soderbergh’s Statement
Steven Soderbergh, the director of films like Ocean’s Eleven and Traffic, has confirmed a project won’t be moving forward. He playfully said he had a lot of fun imagining the movie, but he’s disappointed fans won’t get to see it.
What happened?
Disney paused development on a new Star Wars film after Bob Iger and the company decided to slow down on releasing new movies, largely due to the negative reaction to The Last Jedi. Work on Rise of Skywalker was already underway at the time.
As I mentioned before, Disney paused production on new Star Wars films, and Adam Driver’s movie ended up being canceled as a result.
What’s next for Star Wars?
Although a standalone movie focusing on Adam Driver’s character, Ben Solo, isn’t moving forward, Star Wars continues to develop new content. Lucasfilm has multiple projects in the works, but Disney is carefully reviewing them all.
The first Star Wars film since 2019, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is scheduled to release on May 22, 2026. The movie will bring back Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin and the beloved Grogu for a new adventure, and it’s expected to continue the story from the Disney+ series.
The second season of Ahsoka is planned for release in 2026, picking up the story of Rosario Dawson’s character after her battle with Grand Admiral Thrawn. It’s expected to set the stage for a major crossover movie featuring characters from The Mandalorian and related shows.
In 2027, Lucasfilm will release Star Wars: Starfighter, a new movie directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. The film is intended to recapture the exciting space battles that fans loved in the original Star Wars movies.
