Zach Cregger’s horror film, Weapons, which was a hit in theaters this summer, will be available to stream on HBO Max starting October 24th. It first premiered on August 8th and quickly gained attention as one of the best horror movies of the season.
The film centers on the strange disappearance of seventeen students from the same class, all on the same night. It combines the eerie feel of urban legends with the surprising turns director Cregger is known for.
Weapons is the new film from Cregger, following his popular 2022 movie, Barbarian. He wrote the script for Weapons himself, and several studios were eager to make it – New Line Cinema eventually won the rights.
Filming was initially delayed by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but it finally started in Atlanta in February 2024 and finished in July. The scriptwriter, Cregger, is said to have sold the script for $38 million.
The film boasts a talented cast including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Cary Christopher. Beyond directing, the filmmaker Cregger also wrote, produced, and even composed music for the movie.
The movie Weapons was a box office success, bringing in $267 million globally, including $151 million in the United States and Canada.
The film was projected to earn at least $65 million in theaters, and critics have generally given it positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reports that 94% of 360 critics recommended the film, praising it as a skillfully made and thrilling horror story that confirms the director’s talent in the genre.
The film received very positive reviews, earning a score of 81 out of 100 from Metacritic. Viewers also loved it, giving it an A- grade on CinemaScore and 4 out of 5 stars on PostTrak. A strong 65% of viewers said they would definitely recommend it.

Critics loved Cregger’s unique style. John Nugent from Empire gave the film a perfect score, noting that it somehow succeeds despite its difficult subject matter. He wondered if a movie about missing children and grief could be considered enjoyable, but concluded that Cregger makes it seem easy.
Critics generally praised the film. Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com gave it a strong 3.5 out of 4 stars, appreciating that the story didn’t spell everything out for the audience. Peter Debruge from Variety described it as a darkly funny and disturbing tale, while Tim Grierson of Screen Daily noted the film skillfully builds tension and delivers a powerfully violent, yet satisfying, climax in its final twenty minutes.
According to Charles Pulliam-Moore of The Verge, the movie smartly shows how groups of people often blame made-up problems instead of dealing with actual ones.
I’m so excited! Soon, I’ll be able to watch one of the biggest horror movies of 2025 from the comfort of my own home, now that it’s coming to HBO Max. I’ve been hearing so much about it!
