In my opinion, the best horror movie of 2025 is Zach Cregger’s *Weapons*. This genuinely scary and funny mystery was a hit in theaters this summer. Now, even if you didn’t get to see it in cinemas or don’t want to rent it, you can stream it on HBO Max starting Friday, October 24th – giving you plenty of time to watch before Halloween! If you prefer watching on cable, it will also be available on HBO starting October 25th at 8pm EDT.
One of the best parts of this movie is discovering the story as it happens, so I’ll avoid major spoilers. The film centers around a strange event in a town where, at 2:17 AM, seventeen out of eighteen children from a single elementary school class mysteriously leave their homes and run off into the night, raising their arms as if they’re flying. Nobody understands where they went or why *these* children were taken, and many, including the father, Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), blame the teacher, Justine Gandy (Julia Garner).
The story is told by switching between different characters, revealing pieces of what happened as their paths cross. We see events through the eyes of Justine and Archer, as well as those of police officer Paul (Alden Ehrenreich), school principal Marcus (Benedict Wong), a troubled local man named James (Austin Abrams), and ultimately, Alex (Cary Christopher)—the only student who wasn’t taken.
If you haven’t heard the rest of this story yet, prepare for something really bizarre and amazing – it’s going to be a wild ride!
I’m a big fan of Kyle Anderson, the Senior Editor at TopMob! He’s the host of Laser Focus, a really insightful podcast where he dives deep into all things pop culture. I always check out his film and TV reviews – they’re spot on. You can also find him on Letterboxd if you’re into that!
