New Host of ESPN’s ‘First Take’ Has Been Named

Shae Cornette is the new host of ESPN’s “First Take,” replacing Molly Qerim, who left the show in September, as reported by Front Office Sports.

Jim Cornette, a regular on ESPN since 2020, said he’s thrilled to start his new position.

Cornette expressed confidence in her ability to contribute to the already thriving First Take brand, stating she’s prepared to take on the position.

Looking back, my time at ESPN has been incredible – from when I first started in radio, through hosting SportsCenter, and now with First Take. I truly believe First Take captures everything I love about sports – the energy, the different viewpoints, and the sheer passion – and I’m so excited to bring that same energy to our debates every morning.

Samantha Ponder Cornette will stay with SportsCenter until October 25th. She previously filled in as a guest host on “First Take” when Molly Qerim was absent, and the network considered several people before choosing her for the role.

Before working at ESPN, Cornette built a name for herself in Chicago as a sports reporter, covering the Bears and appearing on their pre- and post-game broadcasts. Since joining ESPN, she’s mainly been a host for college football and an anchor on SportsCenter.

Molly Qerim’s recent departure from ESPN came as a surprise to many, especially since her contract hadn’t expired. Although ESPN offered her a contract extension, she unexpectedly decided to leave both the show and the network.

As a huge fan of seeing talented people shine, I was really pleased to hear that Shae Cornette is officially joining the ‘First Take’ team. The show’s executive producer, Smith, clearly thinks the world of her, and rightfully so! He said hosting that show is incredibly demanding – you need to be confident, strong, and *really* know your sports – and that Shae delivers on all fronts. He’s seen her handle the show with a fantastic combination of grace and energy, and he genuinely believes she’s a natural. It’s great to see someone so deserving get the recognition they deserve.

This update signals a fresh start for “First Take,” and Cornette’s background with ESPN shows she’s ready for the challenge of a daily debate program.
