After playing Pokémon Legends: Z-A for a few hours, you’ll encounter a character who lets you choose one of three Pokémon. Just like in games like Pokémon X and Y, these are the original Kanto starters: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander.
While all the original Pokémon starters are great, Bulbasaur often gets overlooked and seems to receive less favorable treatment in games. Game Freak appears to make things a little harder for players who choose Bulbasaur compared to those who pick Charmander or Squirtle.
Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard – the final evolutions of the original Kanto starters – all gain incredibly strong Mega Evolutions that are great additions to any team. While many Pokémon can Mega Evolve, it’s a huge advantage to be able to start training one so early in the game.
So, if you’re a Bulbasaur fan like me, getting Mega Venusaur is a bit of a grind. Blastoise and Charizard both have their Mega Stones available pretty early on – as soon as you get the Mega Ring. But Venusaur’s Mega Stone? It’s unlocked by progressing through the story, so you’ll have to play for a while before you can Mega Evolve it. It’s a bummer, but worth it in the end!
This has both advantages and disadvantages. The good news is you’ll receive the Venusaurite as part of the game’s story, saving you money compared to buying the Blastoisite, Charizardite Y, or Charizardite X. However, your Venusaur won’t be able to Mega Evolve until later in the game. By that point, you’ll likely have already trained other Pokémon that can fill a similar role.
If you’re unsure which starter to choose, we suggest Charmander. Its final evolution, Charizard, has two different Mega Evolution forms, making it very adaptable. This is especially helpful if you follow our advice and pick Charmander as the best starter in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, as it can cover a lot of weaknesses in your team.
