Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez are returning as Prince Henry and Alex in the sequel. They play the prince and the First Son who initially clash but eventually fall in love. The first movie, based on Casey McQuiston’s popular 2019 novel, came out in August 2023 and quickly won over viewers with its charming blend of humor, romance, and emotional depth.
Jamie Babbit, the director of the cult classic *But I’m a Cheerleader* and episodes of popular shows like *Gilmore Girls*, *Russian Doll*, *Silicon Valley*, and *Only Murders in the Building*, will direct the sequel. Babbit expressed her excitement, saying she’s happy to return to a story about queer love after directing *But I’m a Cheerleader* early in her career. She believes everyone needs the optimism, fantasy, and happiness this film offers, and is eager to collaborate with the talented team involved.
Matthew López, the director of the first movie, co-wrote the screenplay for the sequel with Gemma Burgess and Casey McQuiston. López, who is also a producer on the project, said he’s thrilled to continue Alex and Henry’s story in *Red, White & Royal Wedding*. He enjoyed working as a producer and co-writer to develop the next chapter and is happy to hand over directing duties to Jamie, believing their vision and comedic style are a great fit for the film.
As a film critic, I’m getting a strong sense of enthusiasm from Amazon MGM Studios about this project. Julie Rapaport, who heads up film development there, told me they’re thrilled to be continuing the story with Jamie Babbit directing. She really highlighted Babbit’s knack for both comedy and genuine emotion, saying she’s the ideal person to expand on the wonderful foundation laid by Matthew López, who did a fantastic job adapting Casey McQuiston’s book. It sounds like a real team effort with a lot of talented people – including the stars, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez – all aiming to deliver a truly memorable sequel for fans.
Details about the new movie are still secret, but it will likely follow Henry and Alex as their relationship develops after they finally got together and celebrated Alex’s mother winning the presidential election. The original cast, including Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Uma Thurman, might be back too. In an interview last July, Uma Thurman said she’s on board when the time is right.
A release date for the new movie hasn’t been announced yet, but the original film is now streaming on Prime Video, so fans can re-watch it before the sequel comes out.
