Netflix’s new true crime series, ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story,’ debuted at number one on the platform’s weekly TV chart. The show earned 20.7 million views between October 13th and 19th, a great start for its first full week. It previously garnered 12.2 million views in its first four days.
The new series is performing about as well as ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ which reached 19.5 million viewers in its first week. However, interest seems to be fading. Daily viewership started at 4.1 million during the opening weekend but fell to 2.9 million by the end of the week.
Here’s how it compares to previous seasons
Initially, viewership for this series mirrored that of the hit Netflix show, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which averaged 4.4 million daily views during its first weekend and held steady for a week. Now, however, this series is performing more like the Menendez series, which averaged 2.8 million views per day during its first week.
Although many people are still interested in the story of Ed Gein, it probably won’t become as popular as the Dahmer series. Dahmer is currently fourth on Netflix’s list of most-watched shows, and unless something changes, Ed Gein’s story isn’t expected to reach that level of success on the platform.
Other Netflix hits this week
The show’s popularity might be changing with the seasons. People are watching more lighthearted content, especially shows with a holiday theme. For example, ‘Is It Cake? Halloween’ on Netflix was the second most popular show last week with 5.7 million views, closely followed by the docuseries ‘Victoria Beckham’ at 5.6 million views.
The comedy-drama series *Boots*, inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir *The Pink Marine*, didn’t launch as quickly. The show, about a gay teen who enlists in the Marines in 1990 and keeps his sexuality a secret, started with 4.7 million views.
Oh my gosh, you guys, the new movie ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ is EVERYTHING! It totally blew up and became the most-watched thing this week with over 21 million views after it came out on Friday! And can we talk about ‘Demon Hunters’? Even after being out for 17 weeks, it *still* pulled in 17.8 million viewers – though it did drop a bit from last month. I’m obsessed! And if you’re into true crime, ‘My Father the BTK Killer’ is seriously gripping – it got 5.7 million views, which is amazing. I’ve watched them all multiple times, obviously!
